I love those darn Uinta's.

Found myself camping the regular spot with family and friends. Weather was in the 70's, it rained slightly Thurs evening, and hardly any wind.

We camp next to the same river every year. I started off fishing it near camp the last several years. Down this low there are cutts and brookies. I've had some fun afternoons fishing for them and not seeing a single person. Fish average 6-10" with an occasional 14" fish.

This year I was determined to find out more about this river. Over the 4th I hiked in a mile from the trail head which is a couple miles above our campsite. I immediately noticed a difference in the fishing. The majority of the fish were cutts, an occasional brook thrown in. Fish were all over my foam stimi. Fish now averaged 8-12" and topped off with a 16" cutt hiding under a fallen tree.

This last weekend I put a little more dirt to the boots and hiked up another mile. Hot damn was I pleased to find that it only got better. Most fish were at least 10", and my best was 16" with a belly bigger than mine. Once again mostly cutts, and the color and markings on these fish, oh the markings. Spotted from head to tail, back to belly. I"ve never seen so may spots on a cutt.

Best part of the whole experience.....not a single soul to be seen......on a weekend where half of Salt Lake showed up. I feel sorry for those fishing the lakes off the side of the road loaded with city folk and 10" planter bows.

I also discovered a piece of Uinta heaven last weekend in the form of a small unnamed lake that was full of beautiful, hard fighting Cutts that took our dry flies like candy. My 10 and 8 year old sons both caught fish on the fly rod without any help from Dad and the 10 year old caught the biggest fish, a 15" red sided male with dime sized spots. And the best thing was no other people to be seen and the only tracks on the bank before we arrived were Elk tracks. The bad part was the batteries in my camera died so I don't have any pictures.

By the way, the #1 fly on all the lakes we fished was a #14 Trude slowly stripped on the surface. This was due to the fact that there was a hatch of Sedges going on and the fish would slam anything making a wake on the surface.
