I've been lurking on this site for the past couple of months and decided it was time to post a message. I've read a lot of good posts from the members of this board. I just want to thank all of you for posting the messages you do.
I'm pretty new to fly fishing. I usually just fish locally and take the time to make sure my equipment is clean, but I'm heading up to Yellowstone next week and was wondering, what is the best way to clean my equipment? I've heard people talking about using a bleach solution. Is this the best way to ensure that my equipment is safe and that I won't be the cause for some whirling outbreak?
Also, I was hoping that a few of you have fished a few of the rivers or lakes up in Yellowstone and could give me a few pointers. What flies do you prefer? What rivers are hot? And, what the best way to set up my line will be? I've read posts about using a fly and a bubble, but I've never seen anybody fish like that. How do you set this up?
Thanks in advance to those that reply to my post!
Welcome to the boards teeps, it's nice to have you here. Here is some info from the DWR about cleaning your stuff, and using bleach.

Good luck on your trip, let us know how you do. Sorry I've never fished up that way, so I cannot be of much use.

I don't know much about fly fishing but I can tell you how the fly and bubble thing works. It is a way for spinner-rod fishermen (like me) to use a fly. You tie a dry fly and leader a few feet behind a bubble. Fill the bubble partway with water and chuck it out as far as you can and reel it back.
Good luck in Yellowstone. That sounds like a lot of fun!

Welcome. A fly and a bubble rig is not limited only to surface dry flies, although it is a great way to fish. I usually put a bubble above the swivel and then about four or more feet of leader to the tied on fly. If you can figure out the right fly it is a very effective rig. Vary the speed of your retrieves. Sometimes you can barely move it and other times you are reeling in so fast that the bubble is making a wake. Feel for the bumps in the pole when they hit the fly and then set the hook. I was catching trout yesterday at Devils Creek by Malad, Idaho with a bubble and a fly, but the presentation required the bubble be completely full of water so it would sink, and we added a split shot sinker to help it get down to the bottom and slowly reeled and jigged the black or brown leech pattern fly. We caught about twenty in 3 hours, and the pontoon fishermen were catching a lot. One guy said he was "going on a hundred, and only had 48 left to go." It is a great way to fly fish without a fly rod. Acey

10 % bleach solution works great. Make sure you scrub felt soles thoroughly. Also, completely drying out your equipment helps.

I [black]fished the Madison just outside of West Yellowstone and did very good using[/black] nymphs. Pheasant tails, hairs ears, wolley buggers and prince nymphs did the trick. I used size 18 to size 14 for all but the buggers. They were bigger.[black]I also used a San Juan Worm and tied a nymph about 18" behind it. Remember to use barbless hooks and no lead sinkers inside the park. The fly shop in West Yellowstone is very willing to help with information and has a good selection of flies for the local waters. One thing to remember when nymph fishing is to mend your line and keep you fly on the bottom of the stream. I also like to use a strike indicator when nymphing so I can detect the light strike that often occurs. Be sure to let us know how you did. DKS
