This weekend I'm heading up to Island lake in the uintas. It is the Island lake that you get to by hiking from the crystal lake trailhead. I want to get some fishing in but last time I went here I had little success. I hear long lake (on the trail in) might be better for catching brook trout. Does anybody know anything about fishing in either of these lakes?
I fish Long and Island Lakes usually every year but have'nt yet this year. I've always done better at Long than Island Lake. We usually catch Brookies at Long and Cutts at Island Lake. We also do even better at Duck Lake right below Island.

Stickhorse is right, last time I was at island I only caught one and that was one I caught with my hands cas it was spawning. I think there are some big cutts in there, but they seem to be hard to entice. Ive had nonstop action at long lake before right before dark for the brook trout. If those lakes suck, head over to marjorie and try for some grayling or head to weir for cutts, brooks, or a grayling or two, the fishing is usually fast.

I don't know about Long as I've never fished it but I fished Island a few weeks ago and it was very slow. I would guess that most of the other lakes along the way would be better than Island.

I was there two weeks ago. We caught most of our fish from Weir. We fished Long for a couple of hours without a bite. We only caught brookies at Weir fishing bait off the bottom. We tried Marjorie as well catching only one Grayling.

Good luck

I agree with the rest long lake is usually a lot faster fishing in general but the fish seem to be a bit smaller. Island, Duck, and Fire can be good but they are more hit and miss.

Well, we got back from there on saturday. Fishing at Island lake was very, very slow. Didn't get much of a chance to fish Long lake. Also fished Big Elk Lake, and everybody but me had good to moderate success on the brooks.
