went up to jordanelle and fished the rockliff arm for smallmouth and perch. The foreman gave us a bunch of crap for walking on his road. You can walk out through the brush and he doesn't care, but don't walk on his road. Anyway other than dealing with him the day was awsome. we caught a whole bunch of perch, Most were kind of small, but we caught 26 smallmouth and 5 were over 13".
1 was 16 two were 14 and 2 were 13 1/2". One smallmouth scared the crap out of me when it engulfed the 7" perch I was reeling in. Instinct set in and I tried to set the hook before he swallowed the fish so I missed him. He looked to be about 20 or so inches though,

Sounds like a fun trip! What were you using, if you don't mind sharing.

I haven't had a smallie take a perch like that before at jordanelle, must have been a rush! I had a musky take a smallmouth from me on a river in Virginia (the James), but I did the same thing you did, and pulled the smaller fish out of the predator's mouth.

We should all respect those crews who are working on the road and ramp who are just trying to do their job. They have a right to close it down, and it is for their safety and ours. I've never done work similar to theirs, but I'm sure it makes it 10x tougher with people trapsing through where they are trying to work. At least they are being cool about us parking a little further away and walking in a little ways around them. The guys I talked to a few weeks ago were very helpful and friendly.

Sounds sweet! Can't wait to rip into the smallies the 27th and 28th. What were you using? Mind if I post this report on OutdoorsGoneWild.com? We are having a meet and greet there the 28th and it would be great information to pass along to the folks who are hitting the website.

thx

I was using red head jigs with chartreus boddies and chartreuse paddle bugs. I have no problem with the construction crews, most of the guys were really cool about it and we weren't in anybodys way. we were there earlier than any of the crew and stayed off to the side. I used to work construction and know the right of way problems and worksite problems so I was staying as far out of the way as possible. In fact he had to drive about 300 yards out of his way to even get to us. In fact I visited with a few of the guys there and they were all really nice. This guy just seemed to have little man syndrome. I have delt with it way too many times when I used to work construction. I didn't have a problem with staying off the construction site just his attitude about it. He said we could still fish there he didn't even care about that, he just wanted to show his authority. Oh well who cares anyway. the point is you can still fish there just don't walk on the road stay out in the grass and he won't bother you.

Jed-
Thanks for the report on access to the area. Hope I didn't sound like I was getting after you.

Is that sign that says the area is closed still there by that shed? How long does it take to walk from there, around the construction to the water?

So, the foreman said he didn't mind if we walked around the construction to get to the water? Is the area you have to walk through marshy, or is easy to walk on?

Thanks!

that is what he said, but the less you can talk to or catch his eye the better. It takes about 10-15 minutes to hike down there if you have your float tube on your back or sholders. It wasn't too bad. coming back loaded with fish is harder and since he doesn't want you on the boat dock getting in the water is a little mucky, but if you float the river it is easy. The area you have to walk on is not bad at all just grassy and has some sticks and stuff, but it is not marshy. next time I may just throw my tube in the river with a line and let the river do the work for me.

Sounds like a really great trip Jed. That sure would have been a rush to see that big smallie homing in on your perch. Too bad you missed him. Thanks for the report, and good luck on your next trip out.

It was an awsome day. I wish I could have stayed longer though. we fished from about 8:00-1:00. so not bad, but of course I am a die hard and can fish from 6:30am to 7or 8pm.

Sounds like you had a great trip. I went up there in the late afternoon and got driven off the lake right after I started by high winds, lightning, and a downpour. I got one 11-12 inch smallie to net before I threw in the towel. I then went and fished the river and got a few trout before heading home. Good luck to all this week.

Too bad the weather wasn't very cooperative for you. At least a smallie made your day a non-skunkie day. I've talked my kids into going tomorrow (8/20) to Jordanelle, we'll probably head out to Rock Cliffs and check out the progress of the work being done over there. We'll be on a boat so we won't have to hassle with the construction work.
