Well, its been an awesome "Year of the Smallmouth" so far.
I decided to share a couple pics with you all to get myself excited and pumped up for the next couple months.
Heres a nice little bugger. [Image: BASS8424CustomImage014382.jpg] [Image: BASS8424CustomImage0153823.jpg] [Image: BASS8424CustomImage0209673.jpg] My kids have really enjoyed the smallmouth fishing this year. Sometimes they just about cant handle the powerfull pull of the smallmouth bass, but they love it anyways. [Image: BASS8424CustomImage0216304.jpg] But heres the thing, this year has really been great because I have this specific color that is jujst awesome on the smallie out here in the mountian west. But yammamoto doesnt make it in a senko, wave doesnt make it, no one does. But, today I had maniac custom lures make me some. What an awesome find. I went up to maniac lures and showed the owner what I wanted. Where else can a guy get that? I ordered 100 of these screamin hot smallmouth slayers. I cant wait for the prime time fall bass fishing to kick into full swing. With my new specialty maniacs and my arsenal of maniacs in the mountain west colors, I cant wait. Toad smallies, here I come. Now for some better fish pics. [Image: BASS8424CustomImage016389.jpg] [Image: BASS8424CustomImage0174206.jpg] But I really cant wait to get one of my personally designed cusom maniacs in front of one of these bad boys. [Image: BASS8424CustomImage0185009.jpg] [Image: BASS8424CustomImage0197689.jpg] The fall smallmouth fishing is at the doorstep, with the cooling temps, we ought to be seeing the big fish feeding heavy again, putting on the pre winter feed bag and getting active. Better get into Hooked in kaysville and get you some maniacs. Or you can just get them online. Pineview is going to be awesome for some real nice smallies, starvation will be largely overlooked this fall for big smallies and huge numbers of smallies. Jordanelle is going to be incredible. Echo, the gorge, and the snake are going to be so much fun you wont believe it. And i am so ready and excited you better watch out. So, lets turn this into a smallmouth pic post. Post up your smallmouth pics from this year, and who knows, maybee we will give away a prize in a week or so.

Those sure are some great pics Predator, thanks for sharing. Good luck this fall hittin' the toads.

Awesome pics! This year has been the year for me for targeting smallmouths. These two toads were taken at Rock Cliffs at the last BFT get-together. The hot lure for me this year has been the 4" watermelon Senko, wacky-rigged or dropshot-rigged. I'm planning on heading to Jordanelle tomorrow with my kids. I will be in a white/blue closed-bow BellBoy with BFT stickers on the stern.

Geez Predator, I'm a little jealous. Those are some sweet pictures. That big one with the sun on it showing off the stripes and spots is incredible.

This was my first full year going after smallies and it's been a blast. I've never fished Jordanelle in the fall, and....(to borrow an overused phrase lately).... I CAN'T WAIT!

You mentioned "maniacs". Are those a different kind of lure, just made by maniac custom lures, or is it a specific lure?

Thanks!

[#502800] No guts No glory, sell the weldcraft and get a new Ranger Z-21 Comanche. You can upgrade that 150 to a 250hpdi Vmax Yamaha.[/#502800]

Beautiful smallmouth pics, Predator. I have a question for you though: How are you rigging your senko-style maniac worms? Whenever I wacky rig my senkos I hang up too often on submerged brush and lose my entire setup, so I have been Texas rigging them above a dropshot weight.

Also, this will be my first year also for fishing for smallies during the Fall. Should I begin to fish more shallow again as cooler weather approaches? Is fishing in the Fall similar to fishing during the Spring spawn? I would appreciate the advice, since the Fall is my favorite season, and I'm looking forward to the smallie action.

Thanks,

PF

"You mentioned "maniacs". Are those a different kind of lure, just made by maniac custom lures, or is it a specific lure?"

[black]Yep, they are different. Yep, they are specific. Anyone who has been playing around with senkos in the various different brands will know that each brand is a bit different, and some brands work better than others. [/black]
Also you will know that depending on the brand, the lure diameters change. Senkos get smaller in dia on the three inchers, and bigger in the four and five inchers. Wave worms are skinny in all sizes, berkley and the rest all have the same size variation.
The maniacs are a different type of lure in bolth available colors, sizes, diameters, and salt.

" would you mine sharing a picture of one of these Maniacs, in the mountain west color?"
[black]No problem. Here you go. Try finding this in any other brand. It doesnt exist. [/black]
But heres why I love maniacs. first, they work really well. second, they are inexpensive. senkos run $5.99 for ten. maniacs work better, and run less than $4.00 a bag for the 3 inch, and less than $4.50 for the four inch. third, in order to get the killer color in a senko I was having to die them with paint markers and all that. Maniac took care of that for me. Whats the killer custom color I had made up? Oh, some secrets you take to the grave with you. That is unless maniac likes them so much he decides to add them to his standard colors and sell them to the world.
Tomegun,

[black]I do that just for you buddy. [/black]
"[#502800]It just goes to show by those nice pics that my guiding skill is at it all time high. "[/#502800]
[black]I must admit. Your skills have been a huge part of my success this year. [/black]
"[#502800]So, how much is "maniac" paying you for monopolizing this board.[/#502800] "
[black]I dont charge him a thing. In fact I pay him. I am charging you however, for the promotion of your skills in the above sentance.[/black]
"[#502800]You can upgrade that 150 to a 250hpdi Vmax Yamaha.[/#502800] "
[black]Oh, believe me, I am upgrading the engine in 2005 to the 225 vmax hpdi. I want to get my new 2 stroke in under the 2006 grandfather clause.[/black]

[black]Texas rig, above a drop shot? Thats a new one on me. I have a question for you. Whats the purpose of the texas rig weight in a drop shot set up?[/black]
Oh, ok. I got it. you are weedless riging them on a drop shot set up.
I dont have a huge problem with hanging up. Maybee one or two times a trip. On the maniacs, I either split shot them weedless, or texas rig them weedless.
"Should I begin to fish more shallow again as cooler weather approaches? Is fishing in the Fall similar to fishing during the Spring spawn?"
Its not the same as the spawn. Yes some fish will move shallow. Some fish do stay deep though. The main thing is they get active and feed heavily. The big thing is to look st the specific lake you are going to fish, follow the food, and you will find the fish. During the spawn, you have cold water conditions, the males are caught protecting beds. IN the fall, the fish arent on beds, they are more mobile, The males and big females will be cruising all at the same time, the water temps are warm, and on a cooling trend, rather than cold, on a warming trend. The only similarity is that the fish CAN be found shallow again in certain lakes.

Predator,

Thanks for the wealth of information! It never ceases to surprise me how friendly and helpful fellow anglers are on this site!

Good luck to all using these techniques from now until the snow flies! (And maybe even for a few weeks after the snow flies!)

Thanks,

PF

[#502800] Wacky doesn't work very well in a tree infested environment. Texas or Carolina(a light carolina rig is called split shotting) rigs are the way to go.[/#502800]
