I fished Diamond Fork on Thursday. I hadn't been there since they opened the new section. It sure was pretty up there. All the colors were changing and the water was nice and cool. Stopped about halfway to three forks from the old closure and started to fish. There were fly fishermen in all the deep holes so I was relegated to fishing marginal water. I started out with spinners and after a couple smaller browns on those I switched to plastics to see if I could hook up with a big bruiser brown. Well, the first couple casts weren't very productive but then i moved up and fished the tail of this pool where I set the hook on about a 20+ brown. She got up in the current and when i turned my rod to try to swing her to some slower slack water, I must have overstressed the rod or something because it broke about a foot above the ferrule. (section where the two piece joins together.) K, the rod is a Loomis that I had replaced at the start of the summer so I hadn't caught but maybe a hundred fish or so on it and no real giants. Talk about gutwrenching, especially with how much I love that rod and how much it cost me and then to not have a backup rod was an additional blow. Needless to say, my day went directly south from that point but I kept the big fish and made dinner. Kinda took the edge off but I still am bummed about the rod. I think they may replace it because its got a lifetime warranty and it was a manufacturer defect from what I could tell. We'll see. I just can't wait to get back up there and fish it better. Above three forks, the river was shallow and nasty smellin, like sulphur or something. Anyway, didn't see any of the fly fishermen hook into anything but there were tons of grayish hoppers up there all over the place so that may help some of the buggy whip crowd out. Best of luck to you. Oh, on a side note, when I got the fish to shore, she spit up a complete sculpin. She must have just barely gone on the feed because it was a pretty fresh baitfish. Anyway, I'll do better next time.

Thanks for the report, it's too bad about your rod but I'm sure they will replace it for you. From the sounds of it, that was a nice fish, did you get any pictures of it? WH2

No, I didn't get any pics. She was a nice fish, but I felt pretty bad when I opened her up and found two long strings of eggs..... :-( I talked to Loomis today and found out that they would replace the rod for me for free, which is better than shelling out big dinero for a new one. I don't have a digital and the Advantix pix that I have scanned are evidently too much memory or something to post on here because I've tried before and it just won't upload. Time to save for a digital I guess..... Go and fish Diamond Fork, I think its one of the more underrated rivers in the state but it produces some big chunky fish. I guess its like the InFisherman video says, marginal waters sometimes hold the biggest and strongest fish.

When the tunnel construction crews hit the sulphur pocket where they lost their mole, they sealed it off. That closed off the numerous dispersed sulphur springs along Diamond Fork above Three Forks. However, a new large spring popped up (you can see it from the road) and has pretty much killed off that section. That's why it stinks.
