Berg worked for five years as the regional fisheries manager for the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources' (DWR) southeastern office. Berg says his book Secrets of a Fisheries Biologist: How to Catch Fish at Scofield Reservoir is a compilation of 10 years of data and firsthand accounts from anglers.
"I wanted to put the best information in angler's hands. Prior to my book the best anglers could do was to find out what worked last week," Berg said in reference to the DWR's weekly fishing report. "Anglers had no way of predicting what would work this week or at any future point in time. I was in a position to make accurate predictions on how to catch fish because I had kept detailed records of over 1,000 contacts with anglers."
The book is not for anglers looking for pretty pictures or general information about catching trout. The guide provides detailed information throughout the year with specific information correlating to the early, middle and late portions of each month.
Each page has an informative and useful "Did You Know?" feature that provides some interesting reading. Berg also lists an overall success rating, the average fish size, the best methods, the best depths, general reservoir conditions and tips for each time frame.
Berg, who now works for the U.S. Forest Service out of Soda Springs, Idaho, is working on another guidebook on Strawberry Reservoir. He would like to do another on fishing at Lake Powell.
The Scofield book is $14.95 and is available at a variety of fishing shops and bookstores across the state.
