The Daily Herald on Sunday had a full page ad taken out in it by this group: The Rock Canyon Alliance (www.rockcanyonalliance.org). It urges everyone to email John Bennett (jbennett@utah.gov) in the Utah Legislature about how we can help save an important rock formation at the mouth of Rock Canyon from being excavated. I have written a letter and emailed it. Here is the text of my letter:
Attention John Bennett, Project Manager: My name is Kevin Myrup. I've lived in Utah County nearly my entire life. I am currently a citizen of Orem, and I have been following the story about the property/mining rights on a small piece of property at the mouth of Rock Canyon. It concerns me deeply that this historical and beautiful piece of our great state is in danger of being defaced, marred and permanently and irreversibly destroyed so one man can turn a small profit. As a child my father used to take us up Rock Canyon several times each spring and summer to go hiking and nature viewing. I remember this is one of the first places that I was introduced to nature, biology, geology, etc. My dad would point out how the towering cliffs are twisted and bent up out of the ground by the earth's internal forces. This canyon is one of the most beautiful places along the Wasatch Front and it would be a shame if it were scarred in any way. In college at UVSC I also used the canyon for a geology class. Professors there often take their students up to Rock Canyon to study the rock formations there and to get some "hands on" learning. My wife often used the canyon while attending BYU as well, heading up there in the evenings for gatherings with friends and church groups. Mr. Bennett, this is a vital natural resource of Utah and should be preserved at all costs. I hereby implore you to do whatever it takes to use the LeRay McAllister Critical Land Conservation Fund to buy the last remaining landowner of the property in question at the mouth of Rocky Canyon in Provo, so that I can take my son up there when he's old enough and let him enjoy the same beauty that I have been able to enjoy. Thank you for you time and consideration in reading this letter. A concerned citizen, Kevin L. Myrup
