My favorite type of fishing is through the ice, and I can't wait for somewhere to freeze over. My question to you is where is usually the first place to freeze over and about when can I expect safe enough ice?

Every time I walk past my auger in the basement I start salivating.

The last few years Scolfield has been ready to walk on by Thanksgiving morning. Last year when we arrived Thanksgiving morning there was not a trail or track or holes anywhere on the ice so it was a little freeky walking out when you are the first one there in the morning. We would walk 15-20 feet and drill a hole to check ice thickness. And then walk another 15-20 feet and check again. It was 4-5 inches throughout on that morning. Strawberry (the main lake part) usually gets hard enough around Christmas give or take a week or two. The bays like mud creek will be about 2 weeks ahead of the rest of the lake. Pretty soon we will have to dig out that old post about ice safety and all the good suggestions for safety like always having a rope (and a fishing partner) or dragging a float tube or inner tube behind you. Do those little ice spikes that you can carry around your neck really work? Has anyone had to use them in a real emergency sitiation? Looking forward to first ice but there is still plenty of fishing to do before then.
