Bear Lake Fishing Report
Updated Thursday, October 14, 2004

The surface water temperature is 55 F. The lake trout fishing has been red hot for the last few days. Anglers are catching good numbers of fish while trolling both on the east and west sides of the lakes. Cisco Beach, North Eden, and South Eden are good spots to try on the east side and the "rockpile" and Utah State Park marina are good spots to try on the west side. Anglers have been using are variety of lures but good lures to fall back on are flatfish, rapalas, and spinners. Lake trout do not reproduce in large numbers in Bear Lake and the population is mainly controlled by stocking, therefore this is a fairly limited resource. Although you can catch quite a few lakers at this time of the year, please consider releasing fish if you don't plan on eating them within a day or two. Remember the trout limit is two. This means two lake trout, two cutthroat trout OR one of each.

Anglers have been trolling with downriggers, lead core line and even running flat lines. Fish are being taken in relatively shallow water (10-50 feet) deep and right on the bottom. Anglers are catching fish throughout the day and it doesn't appear that the early mornings are any better than the middle of the day.

There haven't been many anglers jigging, however that method can sometimes be effective for larger fish. Tube jigs tipped with cisco or sucker meat is the most productive method when jigging. Cutthroat fishing should also improve at this time of the year using the same methods as you would to catch lake trout.

The only boat ramp that has not been dewatered is the Bear Lake State Park marina. The depth of the marina is approximately 5-6' at this time. The pumping of water from the lake has concluded for the year and the lake has likely reached the low point for the year. Anglers are encouraged to use the new fish cleaning station at the Bear Lake State Park marina. This location makes it convenient to clean you catch before you go home. Anglers can also launch small boats from the sandy beach around many parts of the Bear Lake shoreline but should do so at their own risk, since there are many areas with deep, soft sand on the lakeshore. The concrete boat ramp at Cisco Beach is out of the water but small trailers can still be backed in over the rocky area below the boat ramp. There is a dock provided at this ramp to aid in launching/retrieving your boat.
