EDITOR’S NOTE: Due to rapidly changing weather conditions in the Sierra and Northern Nevada, anglers are urged to call ahead to the sources listed at the end of each area description for reports on the latest road and water conditions.

FRENCHMAN LAKE: Many good reports over the weekend, both size and numbers. The Body family from Reno had success using worms dipped in bacon grease. Good reports from trollers using wooly buggers or nightcrawlers. The change in the weather should continue to bring fish up to feed. Good reports from Lunker Point with Powerbait and worms from shore. Wiggin’s Trading Post (530) 993-4683. Mark Fore & Strike, 786-3474 or 322-9559.

LAKE DAVIS: The die hard fly fishermen who braved last weeks storm were rewarded by catching lots of fish and many of big fish. The recent storm lowered the surface water temperature to 49 degrees. The fish are in the shallows on the west shore from Camp Five north to Jenkins, Cow, Freeman and Mosquito Slough. The hot patterns are Red Copper Johns, Christmas trees, PTs, J.Fair wiggly tails (weighted woolly buggers) in cinnamon and olive fished under a strike indicator or a sinking line with a slow retrieve. The best time has been from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Launching a boat at the boat ramp requires 4-wheel-drive due to ice.
Recent catches: Roger Ruth and Barry Felse of San Jose fished on Oct. 23-24 and landed more than 40 fish using indicators. Larry and Janet Lassic of Susanville landed 21 fish on Sunday. Portola's Will Ghidossi landed 11 fish on Sunday stripping olive wiggly tail nymphs. Glen Fair and a friend caught 20 fish on Saturday using a slow mend retrieve with a cinnamon J. Fair wiggly tail.

TRUCKEE RIVER: The water has come up quite a bit. Although not many people are fishing, the few that venture out are reporting success. Spinners using light-colored Panther Martins, yellow with red dots or gold. Drifting nightcrawlers also working. Fly fishermen using streamers and little nymphs. Some mountain whitefish being reported, they’re like a sucker and not considered good eating. Mark Fore & Strike, 786-3474 or 322-9559.

LITTLE TRUCKEE: Fishing very well. Use very small flies, sizes 18-22, and egg patterns. Kokanee are abundant and spawning. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474. www.renoflyshop.com.

PYRAMID LAKE: Fishing about as well as it can from a boat. Trollers using Flatfish and Apexes, going down 30-40 feet. Find the big pods of chub and vertical jig for them or you can cast to them. Fly-fishing is fair to slow. Dark colors working as well as anything and some beetle patterns. Should improve with a few more weeks of cool weather. Mark Fore & Strike, 786-3474 or 322-9559.

EAST CARSON RIVER: Fishing well. Try nymphs in sizes 14-18. Cloudy days are good for fly-fishing. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474. Woodfords Station, (530) 694-2930.

SACRAMENTO RIVER: Flows at 6,500 c.f.s. Catching limits of King Salmon, 10-25 pounds average, with the occasional 30-40-pound salmon. Using Flatfish T-50s and T-55s, and bouncing roe, both producing great kings. Watch for November and December to produce monster kings, even larger and brighter salmon on the way. The recent rains will bring up more fish. King salmon season will remain open until Jan. 14.
Redding to Anderson. Fly-fishing for rainbow trout is good. Picking up a few steelhead also. Try micro May Fly egg patterns and glo-bugs.

WILDHORSE: Fishing has been good, but the weather has not. Upper peaks are snow covered. Tune up your snowmobile and get your ice fishing gear ready. Wildhorse Resort, 758-6471 or email: dunns@direcway.com.

CROWLEY LAKE: Fishing here is about the weather lately. Overall things have been pretty good. Lots of action for midge fishers in about 10-feet of water using Stevie's Wonder or red/black midge pupa. Hornburgs and olive woolly buggers are also working well. www.performanceguideservice.com.

UPPER OWENS RIVER: Water flow is 100 c.f.s. Still waiting for a migration of fish from the lake. Pretty good fishing for holdover stocked fish with western coachmen, pheasant tails and hares ears. Special regulations in effect below the monument. www.performanceguideservice.com

LOWER OWENS: Water flow is 91 c.f.s. Fishing has been good with a variety of nymphs such as hares ears, pheasant tails and copper johns. www.performanceguideservice.com

HOT CREEK: Water flow is at 10 cf.s. Not much change in conditions. Good dry-fly action early in the day with midge emergers. Also, watch for a trico spinner fall. Small nymphs (sizes 18-22) such as hares ears and flash back pheasant tails mid-day and caddis on top in the evening. Terrestrial patterns like ants and beetles have also been effective. www.performanceguideservice.com.

EAST WALKER: Flows are down to 90 c.f.s. Fishing has been fair with most fish in the 13-15-inch range. Hares ears, micro mayflies, WD-40s and flash back pheasant tails. www.performanceguideservice.com.

MAMMOTH LAKES BASIN: Cooler fall weather has improved the fishing in all the local lakes. Lake George and Lake Mary have been productive with cinnamon woolly buggers and olive matuka's. Recently stocked with some large Alpers trout. www.performanceguideservice.com.
