Hey gang,
The ice is on, so I am back again to fish somemore. It's been a few months since the last time I posted.
I went to Hunnington saturday. We got there at 6:45 am. We were the first on the ice. Several others started showing up around 8 and later. Weather was not bad at first. I peeked out of the tent a couple of times during the morning hours and saw the snow blowing horizontal and a good group of people standing and sitting around in it. It was 77 in the tent till I turned the heater down and stayed a comfortable 69 the rest of the day. We left at 1:30. Everyone else had gone home and the snow had piled up 6 inches to a foot.
Fishing was good. The ice was 10 inches where I was. 4 inches of frozen slush and 6 inches of solid ice. We were about 500 yards out from the dam. Started catching fish right off. Didn't seem to matter what we used, we caught them. I ended up landing 14, lost about that many at the hole and missed that many or more again. I was using a green glow in the dark jig and a wax worm. (my usual). My son was using a pink jig and night crawler. The vexilar showed a lot of fish coming and going most of the morning. Seemed to quit biting around 11. After that, they would come and look but would not bite. We fished in 18 feet of water. Most of the fish were cruising between 10 feet and 13 feet. My son picked up most of his off the bottom. He was sitting in his tent 30 feet away from me. I think he landed 7. Mine were all tigers except 1 cut.
We ended up helping push one guy out of the parking lot. His road tires on his 4x4 didn't do him anygood. We were all the way in the lot but pulled out without a spin. Road conditions out were snowcovered, but seemed okay. We took 3.5 hours diving back to Salt Lake getting home around 5:30. It was a good first day out on the ice for the year. I hope to have many more (like every saturday until ice off). Maybe I'll see some of you on the ice.
