Here is a pic of how I have my sonar set up for ice fishing. I am particularly interrested in different ideas on how the transducer is mounted and held vertically in the hole. In my set up I have my transducer mounted on a piece of 1" PVC that is about a foot long. I then have a piece of foam around the top of the pipe that makes the unit float.
The only problem with my set up is that the pipe doesn't float perfectly verticle in the hole. Everything works great in 20 feet or less of water, but when I move out into deeper water I have to really mess with the cord and how I have it wrapped under my box because I can't always see my jig. Generally as soon as I get it to where I can see everything I hook a fish and have to pull the sonar out of the hole to land the fish and the hole process of lining up the trandsucer perfectly starts over again.
All in all my set up works pretty good and I can get around it by drilling a second hole next to my fishing hole so I don't have to remove the sonar everytime I hook a fish, but if I'm moving around alot it makes for double the drilling. I just want to see if anyone out there has a different or better idea.

[black]Sounds like the problem is not with your sonar but with your auger! LOL! Sounds to me like a gas auger is just what you need![/black]

A couple suggestions. It appears you are putting your transducer in the same hole that you are fishing through. Try drilling a second hold a few inches away from the hole you will be fishing through and then it won't be necessary to remove the transducer when you hook a fish. If you want to stabilize the transducer more, so that it can be kept vertical, you may want to make some legs out of PVC pipe that hold the transducer vertical.

Enclosed is a picture of my set-up for my finder. I wish that I was smart enough to think of this, but they had the box and the PVC apparatus on sale last year at Sportsmans when I bought my unit. I just had to mount the transducer and the finder mount. The vertical pvc is screwed on to the mount, thus doesn't fall off. It has worked great for me.

Here's my setup. Protects the finder and transducer when traveling and takes about 30 seconds to set up.
