Ok, I got into ice fishing about 4 years ago, then ended up going all out and buying all of the gear: hut, power auger, pair of old snowmobiles, etc, etc, etc. I spent a lot of time on this and other boards reading posts and posting advice for those newer than I.
Anyway, I didn't get out at all last year and I am back to the point of asking what is working, where to go, etc. I haven't fished the lake since the new regs. Also, the snow machines haven't been started in over a year and I'm not sure that I have the 'know-how' to get them running to the point I would trust them out there. Nothing worse than being stuck on the middle of the lake with a machine that won't start.
We are planning on heading out the week after Christmas and would welcome any hints or ideas. I am hoping to take 2 of my nephews for their first ever ice fishing trip. Also, is the ice safe enough to take ATVs on? We have 2 4x4 ATVs and think they should do the trick in place of the snowmobile until the snow / slush layer gets too thick.
Anyway, please let me know what you have found.
Two other notes. I have done very well there with red shiners in the past. Anyone know where I can get some frozen ones? I found it is very difficult to find them in the winter months.
Finally, I stumbled across that 'Hooked' store everyone talks about last week. Very informative and nice guy, though I didn't catch your name. If you read this, thanks for the info!
