Yup, the word really seems to be getting out about this site. New member regestrations seem to be up though. I have no number to back my theory, but judging from the icons I've been seeing alot of "newmember" and "bait" under some names I don't recognize. Perhaps all the talk about LURKERS in the posts has inspired some of them to come aboard. I guess that is about all we can ask for.

I hope that a lot of the guest access is from members that didn't log in. I forget and do that sometimes.
I also don't like calling folks investigating the site lurkers in general. I bet most of them have heard about the site and are not sure what to expect until they look around for a while. I remember looking for a week or so before I joined because I thought there would be a catch like hidden fees or something. Let's welcome the new folks like HFT has done and encourage them to join and not bash them for just looking for a while.
Thats my 3 cents worth. [inflation you know] DKS.

[cool][#0000ff]Yeah, we might be sending out some negative vibes with the "lurker" label. Cool it Geoff.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]As DKS points out, some who look while not logged in are actually members. It is possible to get into the board without logging on, and on some boards you can post without being a member. Due to the high activity on the Utah board, and some "hit and run" problems in the past, we made the decision to restrict posting to members only.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Some of us clean out our "cookies" and forget to log in again. Others might be at work, with restrictions on what they can do on company computers. They need to get their fishing fix, so they read without registering.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Still, there are a lot of folks out there who enjoy our lively banter but still hesitate to jump in. More and more are finding that we won't flame them if they register and post a howdy. Still others just ain't the joinin' type. That's okay. We'd like to have them all aboard, but we allow them the privilege of making up their own minds, whenever or whenever they are ready.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Wait 'til we get our new tracking system. We can look right out through the "candidates" computer screen and see who they are. Then, a big sweep hand starts going around the computer screen. If they do not log on within one minute, sirens go off and they get sprayed with glo in the dark fish scent. (Yeah, right)[/#0000ff]

Good one Tube...
I think everyone is making too much out of the "lurker" thing. I "lurk" and not post most of the time. Not unfriendly, just have nothing to say. I only fish during the hard water season and this year, it has been fewer trips than usual due to a large "honey-do" list, so I just look err..."lurk." Some folks don't register because as soon as they do, they start getting all kinds of spam. For a while, I was getting 50 spam messages a day.

[cool]Sorry Pat, didn't know I was the only one using the "lurker" label. I have realized that perhaps I've been a little unwelcoming to the guests. I shouldn't have been catagorizing all of them together. We all know that there are a lot of people that just want to take from this board and never contribute. They may be the same people that litter up Lincoln Beach, etc., and poach and everything else, but it's very unfair of me to label all of our guests as that type of person, and for that I apologize. We were all guests at one point, and wanted to make sure this site was a good place before we joined.
To any of you guests that I may have offended by calling you "lurkers," that are honestly just not sure if you should join yet, or are aprehensive about it, I sincerely apologize.
There, I'm done.
Good fishing to all, and to all a good bite!!

[cool][#0000ff]Hey Geoff, lighten up on yourself. I think several of us probably contributed to the use of that label. [/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]I would like to think that most of the people who violate laws and trash the environment have nothing to do with BFT. We know there are some folks who do check us out for the reports, but I doubt that the worst offenders at some of the spots we know so well are visitors to our forum. Most do not seem to be the caring and sharing kind that would even "lurk" on a fishing board.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]We will let your eloquent apology serve for all of us, and we will try to be more hospitable and complimentary to our "potentials" from now on.[/#0000ff]

Theres one thing you need to consider, not everyone that is a guest is from Utah, BFT covers the entire USA plus several countries. A lot of us view BFT at work where we can not log on. I would have to go back for the thread but we talked about this once before and we keep track for a while, I think the record was over a thousand guest logged on at one time. WH2

Hey kj,
You most definitely did NOT get the spam because of registering here at BFT. It was likely some coincidence. BFT does not share email addresses with anyone, does not sell, trade, or give your personal information away at all. So, don't worry about that. It was likely a survey you completed, or some free something or other you signed up for somewhere else.
Everyone else,
It's true when it says there are 200+ guest on the site, it refers to all BFT message boards (all state boards, general boards, etc.), not just the Utah board. However, I believe most of them are here since this is the most active board on BFT.

Cat..
I wasn't saying I got spam for this board, however, it is possible. There is spyware that is planted on all kinds of sites un known to the site moderators. When someone logs on it sends a message to its originator and then here comes the spam. I view 3 sites, this one, archeryworld.com and bowsite.com and after each visit I can do a scan and I always have 6 to 10 spy software that has been planted on my computer. It is coming from one of the three sites or all three. E-bay gets my e-mail address from somewhere and so do other sportsman type sites and retailers. You ought to do a scan and you may be surprised who is watching you.

Just for the fun of it, I did a scan just a minute ago and found 6 tacking cookies had been planted on my computer. I deleted them and loged back on to this site. I didn't visit any other site, just came straight to this one and then closed down, did a scan and found 4 tracking cookies had been placed again. So, yes, there is someone being notified of every user who logs on. What is happening with that info is anyone's guess. Bottom line is this site is being used to track who's on line by someone or several someones.

i check the website on occassion from work and for some reason i can't log in..so from 8-5, off and on..i'm one of those lurkers..heh

Hey kj that's good information. I use spybot and Adaware on my machines at work and at home. Gotta clean off all the cookies daily. Those cookies do not get ahold of your email address, however. All they do is provide information to ad companies about browsing habits. They are most likely a result of some of the banner and side ads, but not by bigfishtackle directly. Cookies are simply small text files. You would need to be infected with something much worse for someone to log keystrokes, or to mine out your email address. One thing you might want to consider, however, is to not have your email address display in your profile. Make it say, kj at something.com instead of [url "mailto:kj@something.com"]kj@something.com[/url].
That way, automated web crawlers will not find your email address.
Later.

You are right, you should never put your home E mail address on your profile. I don't know if most people know this but BFT also has its own E mail address. I just say to use PM or my wiperhunter2@bigfishtackle.com address. Most people use the PM but some use the BFT address.
