Sorry...stupid alert here...I was out looking at Radios over my lunch hour and found there are about a buzillion different options.
Is channel 12 the same on all types of radios? Or are there certain frequencies that I need to look for? what brands/models do you have or would recommend?
Thanks again.

I believe the frequency should be on 0 or 1 in order for you to be on flat channel 12. I think mine is set on channel 12 frequency 0. The frequency allows you more options if you begin picking up cross talk.

Most newer FSR radios now have more power than the old ones did, 5 mile to 10 mile range. They are all the same frequency, with different options. The 5 mile radios that go for about $40.00 per set are great. If you can find a pair with a charger, I would go for that one. The radios have side channels that give you privacy, if you want it. So say you are using channel 1-0 and there were others talking on it, you could change to 1-1 or 1-2 etc. and get away from the other callers. When I am fishing, I like to hear what others are doing, so I stay on channel 12-0 and monitor everyone there. Channel 12-0 is the BFT group channel where ever you fish. Always start on that channel if you want to talk to a fellow BFTer.

I have found the Motorola to still be the best, most dependable for the average FRS / GMRS radios. Make sure you get them with the 38 'sub-codes'.
However, if money isn't as big of an issue, go look at the Garmin Rino 120. I have one, my dad has one, and we love them! They have integrated the FRS / GMRS radios with a GPS unit. Sportsman's carries these units.
Don't go with the Rino 110 as the mapping options aren't there. It is a plotting GPS rather than mapping, and it doesn't have the memory.
I also wouldn't go with the 130. It's $100 more than the 120 and isn't worth it for the few options they have added, though I do like the added memory. The 120 comes with a base map built in and you can use Garmin software to add other, very detailed maps. The 120 will hold most of the maps for Utah at the same time.
The other cool thing about the Garmins is that they transmit your location when you are talking with other people using the same radios. Basically, the GPS display will show the location of the person you are talking to on the map. This is great for locating your fishing or hunting buddy.
