Ice conditions at many of the waters in eastern Nevada are in good shape for ice fishing. If you can get to the lake you want to fish. However, on Wildhorse Reservoir, an angler went through the ice at a pressure ridge just off of the boat ramp even though the ice where he was fishing was 8 inches thick.
[Image: icefish2.jpg]Please obey all rules of ice safety.
Here are the generally accepted thicknesses of ice for various activities: [ul] [li]1 inch of ice – not safe; [li]2 inches of ice – one person on foot under good conditions; [li]3 inches of ice – group in single file or spread out; [li]4 inches of ice – general use; [li]5 to 6 inches of ice – snowmobile. [li]NDOW doesn’t recommend taking cars or trucks on the ice. [li]The recommended thickness is for good clear ice, not for ice with slush on top. Also, realize that ice conditions and thickness can vary on the lake and that thickness and conditions can change quickly with the weather. [/li][/ul]
There was still open water on the west side as of New Year’s Day with anglers able to fish from shore. The ice on the rest of the lake is not safe. Trout have been caught with night crawlers and power bait. The sizes range from 13 to 20 inches, with an occasional 22 to 24 inch fish being caught.
[#990000]WILDHORSE RESERVOIR[/#990000]
As of January 3rd, this lake had between 6 and 8 inches of ice with about 4 inches of snow. However there was some slush between the ice and the snow as well as some severe pressure ridges. Fishing conditions were fairly good. One party of 8 anglers caught their limit of trout using night crawlers at the mouth of the canyon near the dam. They were fishing in about 10 feet of water just a few yards from shore. Other anglers report catching perch on jigs tipped with worms fished just off of the bottom. Many perch are smaller, though more fish in the 8 to 10 inch size seem to be appearing than were caught at this time last year.
[#990000]WILSON RESERVOIR[/#990000]
As of Christmas, there was approximately 5 inches of ice here, though the ice thickness here changes quickly and can be come unsafe with some wind and warmer weather. No report on fish being caught. The road gets very muddy if the weather gets warm enough to melt the snow and 4 WD travel only is recommended this time of year.
WHITE PINE COUNTY
Comins Lake: Ice is approximately 8 inches thick and nice trout are being using white or yellow crappie jigs tipped with worms. The best action is at the channel connecting the south end with the north end, though fish are being caught in all parts of the lake.

Cave Lake: The ice conditions are also around 8 inches of good ice and trout are being caught here on a regular basis. Most of the fish are 10 to 12 inches and are being caught using power bait or worms, with worms doing the best.
