EDITOR’S NOTE: Due to rapidly changing weather conditions in the Sierra and Northern Nevada, anglers are urged to call ahead to the sources listed at the end of each area description for reports on the latest road and water conditions.

TRUCKEE RIVER: Fishing remains decent despite the weather. Flows are good. As temperatures warm, the river will rise due to all the snow, so this is a good time to go. There have been many brown trout caught this winter in the 20-inch range. Most are taking small nymphs such as the HBI and Baetis nymphs. Smaller sizes, 14s and 16s. Scuds are also worth a try. Fish are holding in the slower moving pools. Spoons working include Panther Martins in black and yellow or white with black dots. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474. The Gilly, 358-6113. Mark Fore & Strike, 786-3474 or 322-9559.

PYRAMID LAKE: Fishing remains pretty good here. The south end is probably the best bet now. Try Lone Tree, Popcorn, Cattleguard and Wino Beach. The grass is on its way out and the bottom is cleaning up fast due to cold water. Shooting heads with a two-fly rig is the way to go. Try a bright fly as the dropper such as white or chartreuse and always a darker fly at the back. The olive martini or the purple cowboy is a good bet. Trollers doing well at Dago Bay with Flatfish in rainbow and frog patterns. Also working well, Lyman lures in frog and rainbow colors. Spinners using Sierra spoons and Krokodiles.
Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474. The Gilly, 358-6113. Mark Fore & Strike, 786-3474 or 322-9559.

TOPAZ LAKE: The opener was pretty good although not many fishermen were out because of the conditions. There weren’t a lot of boats out, but those that made it did well. A lot of 4-pounders came out and seven tagged fish were caught. From shore was also good with many 3-, 4- and 5-pounders caught. Shore fishermen were spread out all around the lake. Orange Powerbait seemed to work well from shore and orange Rapalas for boaters. Fish are in the top 10 feet. Topaz Marina, 266-3550. Topaz Lodge 266-3338.

PACIFIC OCEAN: The next three months of saltwater fishing will be dominated by some Bay Area charter boats running sturgeon and striped bass trips in San Pablo Bay. Emeryville boats will start their trips on Jan. 22, and will continue through mid-March. The 2005 ocean salmon season will open on April 2 and the halibut fishing in San Francisco bay should commence around mid-April. For information or reservations, call (510) 654- 6040.

SACRAMENTO RIVER: Flows at 4,000 c.f.s. Anderson, Calif. The recent rain narrowed the fishable areas for salmon. The Barge Hole area, the mouth of Battle Creek and above Cottonwood Creek are your best bets. Use K-16 sardine-wrapped Kwikfish lures. As the water clarity improves roe should work again. Salmon fishing is closed from the Red Bluff diversion dam downstream until July 16, but there are still plenty of salmon in the are from the Deschutes Bridge in Anderson down. King salmon season closes Jan. 14.
Red Bluff to Redding, Rainbow trout. As weather allows, fly-fishing for rainbows producing some nice trout in the Redding to Anderson area. PTs and Micro May Fly nymphs working well. Practicing catch-and-release method.

AMERICAN RIVER: Fishing for steelhead should start picking up here. The Trinity River has remained good all winter. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474.

WALKER LAKE: Fishing is good. Boaters are reporting 20-30 fish per day. Trolling Tor-P-Dos, Flatfish and Apex in shallow water, 10-30-feet deep. Shore fishing is also good using Powerbait and casting Tor-P-Dos. Shore fishermen reporting 10-15 fish per day in the 2-4-pound range. Ed Jones, Bait and Tackle Shop, (w) 945-2525. (h) 945-2513.

WILDHORSE: Ice is 10-inches thick. Fishing is still good. Bird hunting should get better with the recent snow, 6-8 inches on Jan. 1. Trout derby is Feb. 19-21. Perch derby is March 12-13. Wildhorse Resort, 758-6471 or email: dunns@direcway.com.
