So my buddy and I went up to Strawberry on 1/8. Fished at the Marina for a few hours, we were the ones staying out of the snow via a BLUE TARP. The action wasn't that fast, so we opted to catch lots of little fish, rather than a few big fish, so we decided to go to Currant Creek. We made it to the dam OK, and found a couple others fishing there. Action was much faster, and around 3:00 decided to head back so we wouldn't be spending the night on the mountain in case we got stuck. On the way back past Strawberry (Chicken Creek) the sun was shining on Strawberry, so we decided to stop AGAIN.
Bad mistake. We decided to fish CC West instead of East. It was a 1/2 mile hike out to where we decided to set up camp. Anyone who was there knows how deep the snow and slush was. We drilled 3 holes (Him, Me, fishfinder) Got all settled, shoveled the snow out of the way, got our poles in, set up chairs, etc. etc. Turned on the fishfinder...we were only in 5 foot deep water. Son of a..., so we moved a 100 yards further out. 8 feet deep. We gave up, since it was now 5:00 getting dark. Took 45 minutes to get back to the truck. I'm feeling it today baby.
NO MORE LAKE HOPPING for me. From now on, I'm going to one place and staying put whether the action is good or not!

Got another question but its a different topic, will post new!

I am sorry I have to laugh. CBR and I on Saturday decided it was Chicken Creek West or bust. Well it took us 15 minutes to go 100 yards from the car, pulling all of our gear. As the fog cleared and we could see the ice edge another 300 yards we aborted and headed for the Marina.

How thick was the ice at Currant Creek?

You probably should have gone ahead and tried the 5 feet of water. Tincanfsh caught one nice cutt and missed several others in a hole that was only in five feet of water. And this was in early afternoon, it only gets better later in the day in shallower water.

Funny story, and I feel your pain. It only takes one or two experiences like that before you realize that you should check the depth before you drill all the holes. In fact, I check to see if I can get a reading THROUGH the ice before I even drill a hole. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't.
Times like those make for good stories though.

I appreciate that you are all laughing WITH me and not AT me...

That doesn't help the fact that I can't walk or stand up straight today.

For those interested, the road to current creek on late Saturday 1/8, was pretty snowpacked, but we made it up to the dam and back with no problem in a little red mini-jeep cherokee, with non-aggressive stock sized tires and wheels and no chains. It did require the 4wd however. Once there, the ice is at least 10" thick and more in other places. I've been there 3 times this year so far and the ice is probably thicker there than anywhere else. The whole lake is completely iced over and thick.
The sonar shows schools and schools of fish, and sometimes the action is hot and heavy and other times the whole school swims by and not one fish shows any interest in your lure at all.
I did manage to retrieve my cousins fishing pole on Saturday. He fell asleep, woke up to find his pole had gone through the water..."Hey!? Where's my pole?" he said!!!
He was all mad because his new pole was less than a week old and was the maiden voyage! So he was getting out his backup old pole and I decided to reel in to check my bait as I had thought I had felt something earlier...I reeled in and lo and behold I had somebodys line...with a pole on one end and a fish on the other!
He was grateful to get his pole back.
