For the way I fish, I put the big $$ on my rear fishfinder. If I'm up in the bow, I'm typically casting the bank and just want to know the depth I'm in. I don't care much about fish below since I'm not fishing there anyway. If I'm vertical jigging, I have a way to turn my big finder so I can see it from the bow.

With a closed bow, I can see where you may use your bow motor for trolling. It's nice to know about depth changes as soon as possible, and the bow unit will tell you sooner than a stern mount (about 17 feet sooner in my case). This just makes the steering more precise, less chance of snagging, etc.

I spent $850 for my rear unit, $150 for my bow unit. It suits my fishing style. It may not suit yours.
