Bear Lake Fishing Report

Bear Lake is still mainly open water on the Utah half of the lake. There are large sheets of ice floating around in the middle of the lake, but there have been several boats on the lake fishing this week. The only ramp available for launching is at Cisco Beach. Use this ramp at your own risk since there have been a few trailers that have dropped off the side of the ramp and were damaged. You can shore-launch boats off of 100 North Street and 150 South Street in Garden City. The roads down to the lake shore are in pretty good shape, but you should still have 4-wheel drive. These areas are suitable for smaller boats only and it helps to have a pair of hip boots or waders to get the boat back on the trailer. Pay attention to the ice flows on the lake. If you hit one while running at fast speeds it can damage you boat and engine. Also, the ice can move in on where you launched and make it next to impossible to retrieve your boat when you're done fishing. There is no fog in the valley at this time.
The fishing for cutthroat and lake trout has been good. Anglers who have been trolling using downriggers off the North Eden area have been doing well. Try using rapalas and silver spoons. In addition, the anglers who have been jigging along the east side with tube jigs tipped with cisco have also landed a few nice cutthroat and lake trout this past week. Try in depths of 30-60 feet from the pump house north to Second Point. The rockpile has been excellent for whitefish as have the weeds beds in about 20-30 feet of water south of Gus Rich Point. The whitefish are eating cisco eggs and will do so for the next couple of weeks. Anglers are using small jigging spoons or 1/8 to ΒΌ ounce jigs either alone or below a spoon or castmaster as an attractor. You may also want to try small ice flys tipped with wax worms or salmon eggs below a flasher for the whitefish too. Be prepared for a cutthroat or lake trout while fishing for whitefish since they are in the area feeding on cisco and whitefish.

Thanks for the update. I guess I will plan my ice fishing adventure for next weekend at a different venue.
