[:/]All right, I gotta question for all you BFTers who fish Blue Lake. Catatafish7 brought up the subject on an earlier post. I was diving Blue Lake on Friday and there was a white fish (silver like a white bass) panfish shaped, but it looked like the dorsal and anal fins connected to the tail to make it look square. I tried to get pictures but they were skittish. I'll try again in March when I go back out. They were fairly good size. 2-3 times the size of the bigger bluegills.
On a side, I did catch one large mouth bass on a red and white curly tailed jig (while diving). However it broke my 2 lb test line. Was great for the 5 seconds I had it on. I also caught a 5 year old boy who fell off the docks. His dad said I wasn't allowed to keep him so I almost threw him back! Just kidding!

Ok, that just sold me. I'm sure its a cichlid now. There are quite a few species that fit the mold. Some are african, some south american. I'm leaning towards Talapia, though. It may also be a texas cichlid, convict, or even a Pirhana. Look at this picture and see if the general shape is the same. I realise that the shading is all wrong. But there are over 50 seperate species within this genus.

Yep, McLennon, I think that is it. Closest thing I've seen to them so far, anyways.
I made it out to Blue Lake this weekend for a short fishing trip. It was foggy most of the day and a bit chilly, and wasn't able to see the fish as well as before so I didn't spot any of the weird ones.
I took the float tube out for it's maiden voyage, so spent most of the time getting the handle of that. Also had a couple with me who had never fished before, so I spent a lot of time teaching them the ropes. As a result, I didn't get much time to fish for bass, and didn't catch any. Just a lot of blue gill. Saw some very big large mouth while flipping around though. Maybe next time...
Oh, and they have graded the road. It's 100% better than it was last year...thank god.

Sounds like Tilapia to me too. We've got quite a few of those down here in AZ. With some advice from Tubedude, I was able to catch a few of them last summer. I caught them on corn with a little piece of meal worm (yes I realize that corn is illegal in UT). They fight like crazy, but I've never found a fish that keeps its mouth so tight.
They also cannot handle even the slightest hint of cold water. This past summer I would hit a little pond down the street from my apartment that held a few. One day I ran into the city water manager and he told me that there used to be A LOT more in there. Last winter there was a freeze down here. Apparently that pond had a skim ice on it for no more than an hour or two and it killed off hundreds of Tilapia....he guessed more than 90% of them.
Fun fish though....if you can get them. I have yet to catch one of the football sized ones, but I'm sure going to try this spring.

Ok your pick is generally right by the fact that the rear half is close. In fact it appeared that the dorsal fin and the anal fin were not separate from the tail but rather had grown into each other, but with the body portion of the tail similar to the one in the picture. It was more square in the back end and the snout not as pointed and there was a little more shoulder (like a bluegill but not as pronounced).

I think that pic is one of many sub-species of Tilapia. The ones that I have seen look more like the what you're describing...flatter face and shorter body.
Does it more like the pic attached?

You went diving in there? Cool... say how deep is that place? Can you tell me in comparison to other fishing holes around here, how big is the blue lake?
Tilapia? It does not sound like it... they aren't known to be up this far north. I cannot find any record of them being in Utah or Nevada...

If they are indeed tilapia, then the only place that they could be is in a warm spring like Blue Lake. They would die anywhere else...too cold.

[crazy]Yes, maybe, if you can imagine all the fins (dorsal, anal, and tail) running together. Ah shoot, now I'm not all that sure what I saw. The coloring is better as well, with the exception of the face was white as well. HMMM??? I'll try a bit harder to get a pic next month.
