I once read an article that discussed how to make pure fish oil by taking whatever fish or remenants that you have available including the fatty belly meat and placing it in a clear container with a loose fitting lid or covering the top with cheese cloth to keep the flies from blowing it and ruining the oil with maggots. The article said to put the clear (preferably glass) container in the direct sun so it will spoil, and the oil and water that was in the fresh fish will seperate causing the yellow fish oil to float to the top and you can siphon the oil off of the rest of the mix. The thought that I have on the subject is what I wanna do is take several species of fish (I.E. Bass, Bream, Crappie, Channel Catfish, Carp, Etc.) I wanna try to put up several containers (bottles) with cheesecloth on top and then take a fairly large balloon and put it over the top of the bottle and cheesecloth, my thinking is that when the gases escape when it is decomposing it will expand the balloon and when it is done the balloon will start to deflate, if something happens and the balloon bursts then the cheesecloth will still protect the concoction from the flies. I will label each bottle that I put the oil in as to which species of fish the oil came from. After gathering all the oils I have thought of several ways to disperse the oil. I am thinking about using something similar to a deer scent drag tied on a limbline right at the water level so that a minnow or a bream that i have the line baited with will bounce the line enough to dip the oil soaked pad in the water to disperse the scent. Also they make a dispensor for deer urine that will drip a drop or so at regular intervals, and they do make the more expensive models that are battery operated, but I am interested in the one that is heat sensitive and will drip during the day which I am thinking will keep a constant application of scent/oil in the water.

Interesting idea. I had just read an article from a bass fisherman that said if you're going to use scents on your baits, be sure to use fish oils and not the plant-derived oils since the bass are accustomed to the oils within the food that they eat (other fish) and they normally don't eat vanilla or anise.

Now, how do you get the fish oil off of the top of this concoctionf? And how bad is it going to smell?
