Took the opportunity to run up to Strawberry today with my wife. We got up there about 9:00am, unloaded the 4-wheelers, and headed out the Soldier Creek campground road toward the lake. I'm not quite sure how but we ended up leaving the main road, down a hill, and out onto the ice in a bay way north of the marina. We couldn't even see the marina from where we were.

Anyway, it was a beautiful day. We brought the shack but didn't need it. I drilled a few holes, my wife picked one and sat there for nearly four hours. I moved from hole to hole. I shoulda followed my sweetie's lead. She caught 15, I caught 3. And this was her first time ice fishing at the Berry!

We fished in about 35 feet - right near the bottom. She started out with a white paddle bug and meal worm. She finished with a silver/gray Gitzit and meal worm. I won't even tell you what I used - didn't seem to matter. We did land three nice rainbows which we brought home to feast on. Included are three pictures for a samplin'. BTW, the good lookin one isn't me...

The ride home was strenuous. We left about 2pm, running back through 8" of snow & slush over the 12" of ice. We got stuck going back up the hill to the main road and had to walk the wheelers out. But what the heck. It didn't spoil our day. Gonna do it again real soon. My wife said so. [blush]

Nice report . I been wondering if a guy could get over there on a 4 wheeler . I haven't ice fished Soldier Creek for about 10 years . Thats is where I learned to ice fish for the first time . Been hooked ever since .

I was rather nervous as we headed out onto the ice because of the snow depth. We followed snowmobile tracks hoping to hit areas that were travelled frequently enough to have packed the snow. It worked for the most part. We ran into several areas of slushy snow and standing water from melted snow, and we cruised through with no problem mainly because the snow wasn't deep enough to reach our undercarriages and bog us down. We didn't have chains on either of the 4-wheelers, probably not a good thing.

I would have liked to go onto the ice further east at the last parking area off highway 40, but it was full so we couldn't unload there. Maybe next week.
