Plan on making a trip down to Bullfrog in two weeks. Any suggestions on where to go and what to use for both smallmouth and stripers? First time fishing on Powell so any information would help.

[black]As to where to go, Bullfrog is a good as any place right now. That's where I would head. When everyone was talking Wahweap, I was still headed for Bullfrog.[/black]
[black][/black]
[black]Catching stripers is not too difficult in Powell if you know how to do it. There are 4 ways to catch stripers. Trolling, jigging, baitfishing, and topwater. DUH! Right? LOL! [/black]
[black][/black]
[black]The bottom line is finding fish and that means covering a little ground and using your eyes and sonar to locate them. Once you find them it just figuring out what they'll hit.[/black]
[black][/black]
[black]If they are suspended, jigging, bait, and trolling are your options. If they're hunkered down close to the bottom, jigging will probably provoke more strikes but don't discount bait or trolling. Trolling a JP rig with a whole 'chovy can bring fish from the depths very easily.[/black]
[black][/black]
[black]Don't discount anchoring up at night and trying a little fishing, especially with bait. Anchovies are probably best but squid has worked when nothing else has at times. If you decide to night fish, a submersible light is nice for attracting the whole food chain in. Chumming is legal and works but there is a fine line to chumming and just plain feeding them, [/black]
[black][/black]
[black]Also Shad are legal on Powell so take a cast net if you know how to use one. You can't live bait fish like Lake Mead but you can use them for bait. Earlyseason doesn't produce like the fall though.[/black]
[black][/black]
[black]There's a million and one things that will work but stick to basics. When stripers will eat, anything works and when they're lathargic you may need some flash and speed to trigger predatorial responses. You may need to slow everything down depending on the temperatures. The conditions and fish will tell you what should work. [/black]
[black][/black]
[black]With those four techniques and varying them to match the conditions, you should be able to catch fish on Powell and Mead. [/black][black]I'm no expert but any savy fisherman should have a blast with the stripers there.[/black]
[black][/black]
[black]As for smallmouth? I thought they were a bunch of pests. I've jigged 70 ft deep for stripers and pulled up 3 and 4 pound smallies. I've thrown topwater rigs designed for stripers and I'd catch smallies instead. I've trolled rattle traps and producers along the shorelines and couldn't catch a striper but couldn't keep the smallies off! Ask a bass fisherman, I don't know a thing about them except they taste good! LOL! (for Tomegun)![/black]

Thanks for feedback on this, a few of us are going down on the 17th to give it a go. Might be a little early yet for prime, but hoping to do okay. Haven't fished Powell before, so your information is very helpful.
