Anyone got any ideas for a weeklong vacation/backpacking trip up there? i was thinking Four Lakes Basin as basecamp and then dayhikes to other lakes... Course, Mt Watson area seems to have tons of lakes. Would like to get into some Grayling, since I've never caught them. Any info/advice would be appreciated. PM's are welcomed if you don't want to blab your personal "hotspots" on the board for lurkers. This trip will be tentatively last week in July. I just am trying to narrow down my options, and there are plenty. I'll probably be going down the Highline trail to the basin or taking another route up into the lakes on the other side of SR150. Thanks in advance folks.

RiverRat77,
Majorie Lake in the Mt. Watson area of the Uintas has grayling, although I haven't fished it personally. I, however, have fished Round Lake via the Dry Fork trail, which may be accessed by Weber canyon. Round, Sand, and Fish Lake all have grayling and Round has cutthroat as well. This area is a perfect day trip area or a nice weekend get away. I used griffiths gnat, renegades, and the smallest spinners possible. Good luck and don't forget the bug spray!

I've caught lot's of grayling out of round lake. Beware though...the hike in there WILL kick your butt. It's not that far, but you gain a lot of elevation in a short distance.

Marjorie is full of grayling, but the size leaves something to be desired. I've never caught any that were over 8-9 inches. Weir is just down below it and has grayling also, a little bit better size to them, but not much. These areas are too close to the trailhead in my opinion, too easy to hike in for the day.

Thanks for the info guys... I just have never caught them so I wanted to go try. They sure look like pretty fish in all the pics I've seen of them. Do any of the lakes pretty far back in there have grayling in them? I don't mind being near a trailhead cause I'll be in there during the week. And if I get too smothered by people, I'll hike until my legs fall off to get away. Thats kinda why I was thinking the Uinta's side but I'd never been over to the west of SR150 so I wanted to think about doing that too. Again thanks for the answers.

It had fish in it last year. It is the one that you access from Washington lake trailhead. I only hit it every couple of years, each time hoping that the fish size would increase. There doesn't seem to be much of a forage base for the fish, not much growing out in the water. The fishing was always good though. Black midges or dark colored nymphs, size 16 or smaller have done the trick for me each time. I have used them on both a fly rod and trailed behind a bubble. It didn't seem like they cared how it was placed in front of them, they would eat it. They do have small mouths, similar in size to whitefish so think small.

hey,
I know of a couple great trips that I have been on. I just need to know if you are looking for a week long hike everyday trip (my recommendation), or if you are looking for a hike in and camp for a week at one or two lakes trip? I do know of a lake that you can catch arctic greyling. The greyling arn't big just 6-8 in. in size. This lake is called Carolyn Lake. It is about 2 miles from Four Lakes Basin if you do go there, but the fishing isn't that great at Four Lakes Basin. And if you do need a guide I would be happy to go up with your group, I just love it up there so much. Well, get back to me and I will tell you a little more about what you are looking for.

RiverRat77, I'll echo Hunt-n-Fish recomendation. Lake Caroline is close to 4 Lakes Basin and it does have greyling. Olga is near as well (though I didn't fish it I heard there were greyling there as well). We did 14 scouts (in two groups) at Caroline as a base camp. There are some great hikes in the area for the boys. If the Marjorie is the lake by Pinto that PDS is talking about, I've never pulled a greyling from there, only trout. It is also small and not many fish. Pinto has a great fishery with decent size fish. Pulled a couple that were about 2 lbs for dinner a time or two. As for the 4 Lakes Basin waters, hey they have produced very well for me for trout an occational greyling. If your serious about it let me know, I think I still have some of my topos of the area that you are welcome to use. I've also got a KILLER secret on the greyling if you decide to go. But you'll have to PM me for that one.[angelic]

Sent you a PM. Just me, no group, thats what I'm trying to avoid. I plan on camping and then hiking out to lakes around whatever area I'm in. I don't mind hiking a couple miles or more on a day hike from base camp because I believe I'm in pretty good shape but I dont want to get in so far that I can't make it back to my truck hiking all day one day. I want to hike in one day, fish as much as humanly possible, and then hike out again after a few days of pure ecstasy on dead legs..... [cool] This is a pure immerse myself in non stop fishing type of vacation..... I am giving in to the pure unadulturated pursuit of my one true passion in life..... and I want it to be GREAT!!!
