People Watch as Shark Bites Man in Half
A 26-year-old Australian man who was snorkeling off the country's remote west coast was attacked by a shark and bit in half while 12 tourists and crew members aboard a luxury boat of which he was the captain watched in horror.

Boat captain Geoffrey Brazier died instantly after the 20-foot-long shark attacked him on Saturday near the Abrolhos Islands, report Reuters and The Associated Press. Local authorities say the shark was either a great white or a tiger, both of which are common in the area. Witnesses say the shark went straight for Brazier, while several other divers who were also in the water at the same time were unscathed. "It came in, bit him in half, went away for five or 10 minutes then came back for the other half," Steve Thorne, a manager for the company that operated the boat charter, told Reuters.

The police have called off the search for Brazier's remains since the currents in the area are so strong that his body has likely been taken out to sea. "Also, the Abrolhos is a lot of islands and (has) a big volume of fish and many, many sharks...we don't think there's anything left," police spokesman Graham Clifford told reporters at a news conference. Brazier's death marks the fourth fatal shark attack in Australia in the past nine months.

Australia's The Age newspaper reports that Brazier had a lifelong love of the ocean. Captaining the luxury boat was a dream come true for him since he could spend his days surfing, diving, and sailing. "He was on boats since before he could walk. He had a very natural and close affinity with the sea...(and) he died doing what he loved most," his father Geoffrey Brazier Sr. told The Age.
