Hey I just picked up the special issue of the dwr's wildlike mag. It's all about fishing in Utah. Banner; BASS: Utah's other game fish.
Made for some interesting reading and raised a few questions along the way.
First, how many of you have caught smallmouths in Jordanelle?
Second, how many of you have caught largemouths in Jordanelle?
For those who would like to see how to rig some bass lines, drop shot, Carolina rig, different lures, jigs and what not. Not too bad of stufff in that issue. Heck I didn't even know I knew what a carolina rig was let alone how to rig it. Been using that for years in form or another. At any rate it is a good read and informative.
Nice piece on Lake Powelle also. If you don't have the fever read it and you will.
There's a map showing all the places you could go and catch Bass (sm & lg). Thus the thrust of my earlier questions. Both FB2 and swear we have caught smallies at Jordanelle. I even had F&G check my lic. and take pics of a smallie I caught over in the Rock Cliff area. I know I have caught a few largemouths as well, but the smallies have way surpassed the largies. According to UDWR there are no smallies in Jordanelle (using the map they printed as a guide). But in an article they say you can catch them there. So which is it? <grins> And is there really any largemouths in Jordanelle?

[cool]Hey road, sounds like a great read. I picked up one of those mags a year or two ago about fishing Utah, but I can't remember for the life of me where I got it at. Where did you get your copy without subscribing for the whole year on the dwr website?

Largemouth were planted in Jordanelle during the filling process. The Smallmouth are the main predator in there. When they were stocked in Jordanelle, they were stocked with Deer Creek fish. The Largemouth were put in at the same time but in smaller numbers. The largemouth came from Deer Creek as well. Catching Largies in the nelle can be done. they are mostly in the back of cuts and where the provo river enters in. In the summer, you can catch them with buzz baits where the river enters in. Largemouth bass are an ambush fish which means you have to fish right up in the brush, trees and such. They love spider jigs and senkos. You have to use heavier line because the Largies are pretty big. If you get a chance in May, they will be spawning on flats right in with the smallies. Deer Creek is a much better LM Fishery as it is right now. Every time I go there (nelle) I see baby LMs everywhere! Especially in the back of cuts. In another 5 years the LM population will explode in there. Jordanelle is actually a better lake for Largies with all of the structure it contains.

I have the magazine and it is much better this year than last. I saw copies of it @ Sportsmans but there were few.
I have caught both large and smallmouth in Jordanelle. Of course the smallies ranging from 7-16 inches and the largies were all dinks. Man I have the itch for smallmouth action.
As for powell, I leave in just under 2 weeks to powell for a week of hooking mammoth fish.
Or so I hope.
I definately have the fever.

I got my copy at the ISC show. But I have seen free copies at the DWR office on N. Temple.

I'll have to grab myself a copy of that mag.
I have not done much bass fishing in the past but I have caught a few bucketmouths in the past – never a smallie however. I’ve made it one of my priority goals to get the canoe out on Jordanelle this year and catch me a few. So when you see a big yellow “banana” canoe feel free to say “Hi.”
I got onto BFT in January and have already gotten a lot of great info from you guys. It’s become one of my daily regular sites.

I picked up that mag too and noticed right away that the map is COMPELTELY MESSED UP! It tries to tell you which waters have which type of bass using a color-coded fish, but look at a few of the lakes and its clear that someone messed up the key or just messed up in making it. According to the key, Jordanelle has only large mouth . . wrong.
So don't depend on it for your info. The DWR certainly knows there are smallies in Jordanelle, in fact, in an article in that same mag they list the hottest spots to catch smallies in Utah and they list JORDANELLE as one of them.

[green]Well the LMB's in Jordanelle have been there for over ten years. Its disappointing to see that the population isn't doing all that well. There is plenty of feed ie shiners, chubs, and the perchies. But, you just don't see numbers or large size largemouths. There are lots of areas for the "green bass" to flourish. It just ain't happening. The 6/7 lbs smallies are probably 10 years old or so, and they are doing fine. I dunno. I just would like to see some monster largemouths from time to time.

Tomegun, I picked 2 up last year that went at least that when I took my son-in-law on his 1st real fishing trip. But the bronzebacks at the nelle. well let just say there are plenty and catchin is easy. I'm pruff of that. But i caught both of those largies in the same area, with the same set-up weeks apart. Heck it may even been the same fish for all I know. PM if your interested in the paticlars

Man I hear that!! I was planning on taking tha boat to Powell, but we was burguled tue while no one was home. They got my vacation money and a few other things, all can be replaced. But thank goodness they didn't take any guns and none of my fishing tackle. So now I am looking for a different option. Can't afford to take the boat, but time will tell I have 2 weeks to get it together.

Road,
You live in Heber? So do I! Just moved here a few weeks ago. We'll have to go fishing sometime.
Got burglared huh? That's terrible. Maybe it's going around, I caught some idiot peeking in our bedroom window just last night. I happened to be standing right at the closet when I saw him obviously cupping his hands and looking in. I grabbed my shotgun which was within arm's reach. He saw that and took off running. I went outside and looked around but couldn't see where he went.
It's too dang bad that some people can't keep their fingers off of other people's things. Really sorry to hear they got your vacation money.
