ive heard of using egg sacks for baitfishing. i thought it was illegal to use any parts of gamefish as bait? are people using artificial or are the eggs of a rainbow okay to use?

i ask because im very interested in trying it. my dad got a bow at the gorge a couple of weeks ago that had a ton of eggs in it. could we have used those to fish with? i know it says you cant harvest eggs then release, but if your keeping the fish can use that part of them?

also, how do you rig these? wouldnt they just slip right off of the hook? do these work at strawberry? how late into the year do they work?

Yes you can use rainbow eggs sacks or the egg sacks of any other fish as bait in Utah. You must only use eggs from those fish that you keep, however. You cannot harvest eggs from a fish and then return it to the water because it stresses them too much and most likely it will just die anyway.

I usually rig them by tying them up in a very small piece of nylon stocking or mesh netting. Then I burry a treble hook into the sac and I'm ready to fish. They work like nothing else at Scofield in the spring. They work well anytime a species of fish is actively spawning.
