As many of you already know, the Springville hatchery was closed and the trout will be destroyed because whirling disease was found in the hatchery.
What will that do to our planting of trout this year and years to come?
The hatchery produced over 20% of the Rainbows that are planted in Northern Utah.
I feel that it is time that Utah accepts that whirling disease is hear to stay and quit trying to stop the spread and live with it.
We have Community ponds that could take these fish and be happy to get them. The disease is not harmful to humans and the fish are easy to recognize that have the disease.
I also think that Utah needs to start raising their own warm water fish like Cats and Bass. We import all the cats from other states and net the Bass from ponds that need them left in there.
Utah is a desert, and warm water fish are our future. We need to work together as anglers, and voice our opinions to the State Government.
If we don't, what will be the future for Utah?

I think it would be wise for the community fisheries to switch over to all warm water fish. However, I definitely think stocking of the small mountain lakes and streams with small trout should continue. I'm sure everyone has their own opinion about this, and I don't know if there is a solution that will make everyone happy. As far as giving up and accepting whirling disease, I strongly feel efforts should still be made to keep the disease out of natural waters that do not have it yet. Just my opinion.
