Full Version: How to Catch Walleye

I have recently decided to try fishing for other things than trout. So I made the trek to Utah Lake, hoping to snag a Walleye. I used minnows and worms, 4 hours later I left with nothing but one very questionable bite. Went back last night looking for cats and walleye, using minnows and worms again, and actually caught 3 mud cats, but still now walleye. I'm hoping somebody has figured out these mythical fish, and might share some tips with me on how to bag me one. What baits do you use, lures, fish off the top or bottom, time of day, anything would help.

MOST ANGLERS FISH FOR YRS BEFORE GETTING AN EYE SOME LUCK OUT THE FIRST TIME. PERSISTANCE PAYS OFF WITH EYES. BUY A WALLEYE INSIDER OR SUBSCIBE. THEY HAVE GREAT VIDIOS ON ALL TYPES OF EYE FISHING FROM JIGGING EYES TO CONTOR TROLLING. THEY WILL TEACH YOU WHAT IT TAKES TO CONSISTANTLY CATCH WALLEYE... THEY ARE ONLY 10 DALLORS EACH.

[cool]Well, rvanman2000, the first thing you did right to start catching Walleye was join this site! Congradulations for taking the plunge, and welcome aboard. There are lots of knowledgeable 'eye fishermen on this site, but unfortunately, I'm not one of them (yet). I've been trying to catch those toothy critters for about 7 trips to Utah Lake now dating back to last Spring, but make no mistake, I will get an 'eye this year if it kills me. I've had a few hits that I'm pretty sure were from 'eyes, but still haven't landed one yet.

One thing you can do to improve your 'eye knowledge is subscribe to a magazine called "In-Fisherman" or even go to their website. They cover Walleye's extensively. One of the things that makes 'eye fishing so addicting, (besides their excellent table fare) is how difficult and challenging they are to catch. It sure ain't like trout fishing where you just chuck out some powerbait and wait for a trout to inhale it deep in their gut. This type of fishing as you found out, is VERY challenging. Keep reading posts here, and asking questions. One person (among many here) that you will learn a lot from is TubeDude. Some of us around here call him "the infamous one" or even "Sensei" at times. He'll probably post to your thread here and help you out (or you can send him a private message), as will others. Good luck, and welcome to BFT/Utah.

Were in utah lake did you fish at? There are certain spots at lincoln were they hang out at.I also use a special rig to catch them.At least it works for me.Also walleyes are very finicky about eating dead bait. You have to give them some slack on your line because if they feel any tension they release the bait.I have told this to a lot of people who have their lines so tight that when they get a hit they dont catch anything. If you give slack the walleye will pickup the bait and when you see your line take off just reel the slck in and when you feel the weight off the fish then set the hook. Most people try to set the hook first and just pull the bait out of the eyes mouth.Remember:1) slack on your line when you cast it out
2) reel slack till you feel fish then set hook
Here is the rig that i use for walleyes.I use between a 1-2 ounce slide on weight .Then a 24 inch leader of 14lb flourocarbon.I put on a floater witha snap on weight to make the minnow saty off the bottom. Then i hook the minnow through the then over its back then into the body so the hook is hidden.Hope this helps you out.

I tried both points at the end of the dikes. I moved alittle up the sides of the dike. I am probably guilty of not letting enough slack in my line. I will try making the adjustment and try your setup. Thanks for the feed back

Well Tubedude, I have figured out the secret of life......fish often. Females, it is a lost cause....but I will catch an eye. I'm always interested in a fishing trip with anyone, even some one I don't care for, as long as I get to fish. I need to work on keeping slack in my line, I've always like to keep it tight so I could see definate hits. Sounds like the Walleye are a little smarter than the average trout. Thanks for the help

The way I've always bait fished is to use a casting float above your leader full of water or a slip weight. Then take and hang a clip bobber on your line between two rod guides pulled down about a foot or two. And for quick release of the clip bobber you can take a large hook cut the sharp tip flatten the barbs and clip the bobber to it then just hang the hook on your line you can even set the hook without removing the bobber it will just fly off.
This system has woked for all types of bait fishing for me and all types of fish. It seems to acomplish two things. 1 the clip bobber makes sure you have at least one foot of slack. 2 the casting float (slip weight) insures ther is no resistance from your weight.

[cool] well one thing iev noticed at ut lake is that normally eyes would hit a moving bait rather than sitting still but last fall while fishin for catson the bottom with worms i caught 3 eyes one 24in. 71/2#this year already caught 5 same way both days were windy threw a 3/4 ounce eogg sinker with 3 way swivel and 2 lines with a 2/o bait holder hook right into the wind and watched the end of my pole dance as every wave pulled on the line and as far as a deffinant hit no luck the only way i could tell anything was there was to watch my line in relation to were it was when cast out and if it got slack or not if it did pick it up gently and set the hook.... seemed to work well enough good luck usually fish bird island in a boat but boat broke so i be shore fishin this year might get the tube out!!!!!

i dont mean to rub salt in anyones wounds, and i know how frustrating it is to figure out a new species, but im one of the guys who "lucked out" and caught an eye by accident. it was my only one to date. trolling for rainbows last year at deer creek i had one hit my pop gear and worm. wasnt too big, but it was kind of a cool surprise! my sister in law and my dad had the same thing happen on the next trip there. but, none this year...yet!
