Full Version: Mudfish good cut bait?

Over here on the east coast there is a river species called a mudfish. It's a verocious predator with razor sharp teeth. They're also mindless eatters and plentiful. My question is has anyone tried to use them for cut bait for catfish? Sometimes you can't castnet shad or catch bream for fresh bait. However mudfish are usually plentiful, regardless of the weather conditions or time of day.......as are big catfish if you know how to fish'em. Another benefit of using mudfish for bait is that i'm pretty shure mudfish aren't canableistic. So, in other words, if something hits the line, I can pretty much rest assure that it's a catfish. (or a gar, but they rarely hit LARGE pieces of cut bait) Any input?

Wouldn't hurt to try. why not try the mudfish as live bait also? Flatheads love live bait.

Well, I would try them as live bait, however, in all my years of fishing, i've never caught a mudfish small enough to use for live bait. These are good sized fish. If i'm not mistaken, the smaller ones stay in the back water feeding on insects until they are large enough to move into the big water. I can't get into the back water in my boat, so that rules out that. If I could get back there, i'd be able to catch plenty of bream, hints that's were they congrigate, which would solve the problem at hand to begin with. Good thought though.
