Travel may be limited in places over Memorial Day weekend

A hot, dry spell after a cold, wet spring is allowing road crews a last-minute chance to open roads for the busy Memorial Day weekend. Now, the question is: Will the thaw be enough?

The answers are yes, no, kind of and maybe so.

Yes

State Road 65 (1), from East Canyon Reservoir to Emigration Canyon, opened last weekend, according to Andrew Neff, spokesman for the Utah Department of Transportation.

Green Canyon (2), a dirt road east of North Logan, and Card Canyon (3), a short dirt road that leads south from U.S. 89 in Logan Canyon, are both open, according to the Logan Ranger District.

Causey Reservoir (4) is accessible and has been for some time.

No

High-country dirt roads (5), in general, will remain closed for a while. Many are gated, most are snow-covered and the rest are still very wet. This includes roads in the Ogden and Logan ranger districts. In particular, don't expect to drive on dirt roads in the Monte Cristo area until as late as July.

"We can't allow motorized vehicles to go into places that are wet and sinking down," said Rick Vallejos, recreation planner for the Ogden Ranger District. "The evidence stays for a long time, and that's what gives motorized users a bad name."

Tony Grove (6) is still under plenty of snow, and the road is not expected to open until early July. When it does, the lake will remain low through the season while repairs to the dam are finished.

Kind of

Avon-Liberty Road (7) opens this week. But motorized travel will be limited to the main gravel road. All branches are wet and closed to prevent ruts.

Willard Peak Road (8) is also open. But, to minimize tire damage, stop at the snow line. All side roads are closed.

Left Hand Fork road (9), accessible via Blacksmith Fork Canyon in Cache County, will open for the Mountain Man Rendezvous this weekend. But just above the Herd Hollow Road, which eventually leads to Logan Canyon but is still gated, the road has been completely washed out by high water.

Mirror Lake Highway (10) will be open to the Soapstone Basin Road, about 15 miles east of Kamas. That will open a handful of campgrounds, but the road to Mirror Lake and on to Evanston will probably not open until mid-June.

Maybe

State Road 39 (11), above Ant Flat Road, should open Friday if maintenance can be completed on time, "but I can't say that for sure," Neff said. Call the Utah Department of Transportation at 620-3200 for updates.

The old Snowbasin Road (12) will also open Friday if road repairs are finished on time. There are several sinkholes, but road crews will be patching them this week and Weber County is "shooting to have it open by this weekend," said Kelly Hipwell, director of Weber County's roads department.
