Fished Deer Creek last night around the island in my float tube. The wind was blowing and I didn't get a bite for a couple hours, when the wind went down I finally had a fish on, it felt like a walleye. I fished until dark and caught 1 small smallie and had a couple bites, and lost another smallmouth. I used crankbaits and tube jigs, I caught my fish on a crawdad colored tube jig. It was my first time fishing DC in a tube, is the island a good spot for bass, or should I try somewhere else?[crazy] The water was 63 degrees when I got there and 61.9 when I left.

Thanks for the info tubedude, I'll have to maybe try it again. Until I get my boat I am limited to my tube. Lots of fish showed up on my finder on the north side of the island, but most of them were small, perch maybe. I just couldn't get anything to bite.

Was that you fishing over by the Charleston road? I saw a couple of floaters and was wondering if they were touching bottom.

I was by the island all the time, I caught my fish in between the island and the shore, there were two guys on pontoons out there to. Where is Charleston road anyways?

It's the road at the east end of the lake, takes you to Midway also. The water hasn't been that high in years. It now is covering all the new vegetaion that has grown over the last few years. And has increased the size of the flats by at least twice.

Thats what I was thinking, thanks for the heads up![Wink]I'm not real familiar with that area, I can get to Strawberry and Jordanelle but that is about it.

When I started fishing Deer Creek, I fished exclusively from my tube around the island. Its a good spot, you just have to find the depth that the smallies are at. I also picked up some bonus largemouth off the west tip of the island. I fished the east shore of Wallsburg for smallies up to sixteen inches and eventually fished the west shoreline for some rat smallies and the occasional trout on soft plastics. I just used minnow baits and Brush hogs to get mine but I'm sure any lures in green pumpkins or watermelon colors would work well for you.... I just used a jerk jerk pause retrieve and they usually ate that up..... Sometimes, early in the mornings, like these guys are saying, the big smallies would be in right up on the shore and the edge of the island and you could hear them smacking things on the surface and I used to always catch some good ones first thing.... I haven't fished there in forever.... maybe its time for a revisit of old haunts.....
