Launched at the new Saratoga Springs Marina at about 6:00 AM. Talked to a couple men who had been shore fishing and were carrying a lantern. I asked how the fishing was. The first fisherman said that they had caught some, the second guy said, not very many for the number of hours that they had fished. Headed out to my old honey hole that I had been unable to fish for a couple years because of low water. There was more water than I had ever seen there, but the wind was blowing too hard to fish for catfish. After fishing for about 30 minutes and catching one mudcat I decided that we would load up the boat and head to Lindon Boat Harbor. There was a small army of shore fishermen and fisherwomen at Lindon. Some guys fishing from the docks said that the fishing had been great for walleye, catfish, and bass. Motored over to the AF Boat Harbor.

Yes, Virginia there are lots of mudcats in Utah Lake!

The big one of the day went 6.2 pounds, and it is still swimming and getting larger.

BEFORE -- the ones that we invited home with us.
[inline After.JPG]
AFTER -- yum, yum.
Primarily used 4/0 circle hooks, and I was pleased that most cats were hooked in the corner of their mouths. Left about 3:30 PM, with the weather looking threatening. Some guy was hollering something from the shore as I left the harbor, but I was fighting white caps and wasn't about to stop and see what he wanted. It was an adventure crossing Utah Lake. I remembered why I was glad my boat had a closed bow. I was grateful that the water had risen to 6 to 8 feet deep, and gratefuly we never bottomed out once. Fortunately, I had zipped on the side windows, because one huge wave came over the side of the boat, and we got plenty of water on us and everything else, but it would have been much worse without the windows. Had a fun day with my neighbor on Free Fishing Day, and did better than I could have imagined considering the weather conditions.
