We ended up moving to the Harbor by the Ciscos Landing. The water was calm and lots of Cranes were out on the beach.

We fished for awhile and caught a few Calico Rockfish as well as a nice Grass Rockfish.

Nothing else was biting. Around 1:00, the birds were going crazy and the Cranes were joined by some other large birds on the shorelines.

As we looked at the reflection of the shoreline, we could see what all the commotion was all about with the birds. Grunion!!!!!!

They were all over the place. That gave me an idea so I headed back to the truck to get some plastics.

We started bouncing plastics and leadheads around and ended up catching 3 nice Halibuts. 2 shorts and 1 legal (all released).

We then decided to get some rest for the boat ride that was to come.[cool]

Hey there TubeN2,

Way to go. Those very flat fish may be there in that area all the time ..... I think I would give it a couple of hours a couple of times if I were you.

It's the old thing that where there's halibut, there's halibut tomorrow just not biting ! ha ha

Myself I would do the swimbaits..... BUT FIRST I always throw a Kroc as I seem to be able to catch my biggest halibut out of a patch first thing and then it's scratch, scratch, scratch! ha ha

Good job,

JapanRon

Thanks for the advice. I love the Crocs too. I thought of that as an opportune moment for a good size swim bait.

I used to catch some good flatties off of Redondo, Newport, SM, MDR and other places during the Grunion runs. Sometimes with a plastic, Croc, whole squid or even a frozen McDine.[cool]

We might make that a regular stop for Friday night/Sat morning just before going to the landing.[Smile]
