Lake Mead Fishing Report for June9, 11, and 14, 2005. Surface Water temperature
from 77 to 80 °. Been catching largemouth bass from 4 to 15 ft off secondary points, channels cuts, and edges of flats and back of coves. A limit or better every day out with fish up to 3 lbs. One primary key seems to be water temperature. Look for slightly cooler water in the 77° range or spots that have shaded off in the afternoon. I was getting bit in 80° water yesterday afternoon after the water shaded. Shad have to be present, I usually see bluegills and baby bass around; look for submerged tumbleweeds, tamarisk or willows and you will find bass are in the aquatic growth. I’m pitching to above water targets. In the popular places they are a little skittish and some had obviously been caught before.

Bass were taken on a variety of plastics. Some of the larger fish were the shallowest if the growth was thick. Otherwise I am finding them off the first break in the thicker aquatic growth. Green and purple with blue dominate. Yamamoto #208 and Brown with purple is also good. They seem to prefer a very slow fall generally, but a weather change, like the front passing through on Saturday activates them. Yesterday afternoon’s blow got them hitting on the surface and biting a swimming jig. I had two larger bass chasing the one I was playing trying to get the lure away from him. With the warmer water these pound and half fish fight like 3 lb fish. One thing I do in shallow water (less than 12 ft once I’ve graphed the area) is turn off the electronics and the fish come right up under the boat. Some bass are on the steep walls (but for me they are smaller fish) and someone mentioned smallmouth are on offshore structure. Looks like a very good year class from all the small bass present.

From time to time I see small schools of stripers marauding the shad schools and you can catch these on swimbaits. I’m using a AA 3” baby shad and regular shad on Bass Pro Shops ¼ oz. swimbait heads. Boil the baits before you thread them, thread them hot, for no splits and use some Pro’s soft bait glue to hold them on. The stripers tear them up. I shouldn't be giving this one away!

[size 2] [font "comic sans ms"] Thanks for all the details. Also, thanks for the boiling tip, I split 2 heads wide open. So I ended up super gluing the split, seemed to OK. I'll give the boiling tip a try.

Take care,
David
