Went backpacking into Echo lake yesterday. We ran into snow just before we got to the lake... around 9,500 feet. There was plenty of snow around the lake once we got there, but we were able to find patches of ground to put our tents. The I wasn't even sure if there were fish in the lake until the evening. That was when they started rising like crazy. We had many hits but only managed to land one brookie. In the morning there was a little fresh ice on the lake but it melted quickly. We saw very few fish rise and had no bites. The scenery was beautiful and temperatures were perfect.
So are the roads totally clear then?

I'm not exactly sure where Echo lake is. Is it up the Mirror Lake Highway? I've heard the road is finally open, but there is still snow. Glad you could make it up.

The road branches east from the mirror lake highway a few miles before trial lake. Echo lake is by pyramid lake in the murdock basin. All the roads we saw were clear until we got around 9,500 feet, then we ran into huge snow drifts. I think another week and most roads should be clear all the way. The snow was melting fast.
