Hey there guys,
The Big Fish Tackle guys rode the Premier today. Danny ran the boat, Mikie decked and John was the cook. Got some great anchovies with a few small killer dines in the mix. fantastic bait for cuda and bass alike. Had about 40 anglers on board. Weather was great with a little chop in the morning and early afternoon only later to turn windy and sloppy in mid-afternoon.
Once out on the shoe, initially we didn't get any simbalance of a bite and with no news from other boats at first we decided to head down south. Tried a number of spots to wake up some sandies and calicos but to of no avail. After making a couple of sets where there were good marks but no bite developing, we decided to cut our losses and head back up where a promising barracuda bite was developing. Upon arrival, there were around 7 sporties taking advantage of the barracuda bite flurries. Average size around 6 pounds.
Early on ... Tady 45's and other surface jigs in purple or blue and white did well. After jig strikes petered out, bait become the choice over plastics.... which got only a few strikes. The barracuda remained picky with (in my case) a hookup for every three hits or so. The fish seemed to stay a good distance from the boat so it was a matter of casting and letting the live-lined bait travel further down the chum line. Birdies were pretty active so I used a 1/8oz sliding egg sinker to put the bait down a few inches with my 20 bound main line, 20lb fluro leader and 2/0 circle hook. Not soaking the bait over 3 or 4 minutes, from the cast, seemed to be the key to getting bites.
EVERY SINGLE DAY HAS THE BEHAVIOR OF THE FISH BEING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT !!!
Early afternoon saw the cuda bite diminish but not disappear altogether. The bass bite never did really kick in although we did hit a few spots to scratch just a few calicos and sand bass. Lots of nice sized sculpin (released) made for variety.
Birds and sea lions were around but not too much of an annoyance.
Got back to Pierpoint landing around 4:30 and with plenty of fish filets for those who wanted fish!
Oh ya ...... Guess who won the jackpot AGAIN, this time a 7 or 8 pounder? Yaaa Hooo
Great boat, crew, and today fished with ........ TubeN2 .... the CharterMaster, son, and all our other BFT buddies.
I know I missed this and that TubeN2 ...... please fill us in on 'the rest of the story'.
