My family has a time share at Bear Lake and so we are going up there Friday through Monday. I haven't been up there since I was a kid, and I would like some fishing tips. I know there's a lot of talk of the rock pile. We aren't really set up to troll, so jigging would be our best bet. What kinds of things should we use? I have no idea how to fish the lake. Is vertical jigging with big tube jigs the best bet? Or should I catch a sucker in the morning and cut it up and sink it to the bottom? I would love to catch my first Laker. That would be awesome. I am going to Sportsman's tomorrow to get my reel strung with 12 lb test. Any info on what I should buy would be greatly appreciated.

The lakers can be caught on tube jigs. I prefer to use about 20 pound Fire-line and fluorocarbon leader. It is difficult to hook them with line that has any stretch to it. There might be some fish around the Rock Pile, but I would think that they would be out in deeper water this time of year (probably 70 to 90 feet deep). tipping the tubes with either sucker or better yet cisco would help. Unless you have a good fishfinder, I would try jigging only a few inches off of the bottom. If you live in the SLC area, I have some cisco that I would gladly give to you. Also, you might send a PM to BearLakeFishGuy and see if he has any ideas that he might share with you.

Smallmouthchaser,
I fished Bear Lake on 07-03-2005 with Fish1on. IT was very poor fishing. We managed one small cutt. Released him. We fished all over on the east side and tried numerous technics and proven fish catching lures from the past and nothing worked. fish1on caught the only cutt on a small shad rap trolling.
I, Like fish1on spend alot of time up there and I am not taking my boat back up until this fall. I am going to spend some time at some other places fishing. Sorry for the poor report but I would not really waste my time up there right now.
Also watched four other boats fishing the same area as us. did not see any fish boated. graphed numerous fish at diffrent depths. Surface temp was 62 deg.
Good luck!
