Well ladies, if it were your choice, and you just had to make up your mind, what would you do?

Keep in mind these rods are not found in the state of utah. Running down to the local tackle shop and testing one out is not an option.

Kistler Helium LTA?

Or......

All star Titanium?

They bolth run the same money, bolth advertise thier product well and appear enticing.

Anyone know anyone who has one of these rods?

You would have to twist my arm to get me to buy another loomis. Allthough, thier new GLX jig and worm rods do make me want to change my mind and try one.
I would buy another St Croix legend tournament or legend eliete in a heart beat.
Fenwicks AV & HMG I am sold on.

But these new Kistler and All star rods must be tried. Its a matter of wich one?

Tip 2005 Kistler Helium LTA
While many of the top professional touring bass anglers are using this rod series, the Helium LTA has proven to be the Premier rod of choice for catching Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass for even the beginner angler. Proven to weigh less than any other graphite rod in the world, the Kistler Helium LTA rods give you a sense of feel and confidence like never before. The ultra-light weight of the rod amplifies the sensitivity to unparalleled levels so that even the slightest bite transfers down the rod shaft. The specially formulated blank touts an extremely fast action and when combined with the lightness of the rod, you get more accurate casts when target fishing finesse baits without sacrificing the extreme backbone needed to muscle bass out of heavy cover while pitching a jig. Kistler's own "Smart Touch" reel seat puts you in direct contact with the sensitive blank. We have removed the fore grip in order to reduce the dampening effect from cork to further progress the vibration to your fingers. Stainless Steel, low-profile guides keep weight to a minimum without sacrificing durability. Silky, blue zirconia rings keep line flowing smoothly and quietly throughout the cast and retrieve while preventing grooves or abrasions sometimes caused by heavy braids. Kistler's own "Hook Hanger" design is standard equipment. New for 2005 are the flanged ring tips which eliminate knocked out inserts due to accidents. Well the rod companies found their target audience[Tongue]. Silly Predator, when are you going to learn its the man behind the stick that counts. How many sticks do you have now?

[signature]
Instead of trying out a portable lightning rod...try a Lamiglas. You can find them up at Fish Tech...and they can lighten your pocketbook just as well as those metal jobs.

I've used Lamiglas for years and found them to be some of the most sensitive sticks around. They have a huge variety to choose from. But their not cheap. They are worth the money.
[signature]
You know bassrods, I have been eyeballing them for years.
Just never had them pop into my mind when I was looking for a rod.

If I chose to go that way, I would order one from Hooked in kaysville. James has been a lamiglass supporter for a long time and knows thier product well.

At least he did last time I checked.

And Tomegun, its not important how many I own, its only important that I own more than you.

Dont even get me started about your chronarch buying obsession. E-bay has found thier target audience when it comes to ultra high end bait casting reels, and it aint me my friend.
[signature]
This sounds like a challenge...we need a contest....who owns the most fishing rods...

Put me down for at least 15...I forget how many I actually have...but carry at least 9 in my boat at all times. Not including the specialty rods...and icerods...Oh...and flyrods and some I haven't taken off the wall for a coons age...and the ones tucked in the back of my garage...that I can only see the tips sticking up.

He who has the most wins???

Ok...let's talk tackle...

Oh...wait my wife might read this....forget I said anything.
[signature]
You ain't my friend, my friend[blush]. I only have 17 GLoomis'. Not counting my ice rods, I have a good 40 some odd sticks[Tongue].

The only thing about Titanium that would worry me a little is the fact that it tends to become weaker over time with use. I used to have a wonderful driver with a Ti shaft that was perfect for me. After about 8 months of use (I am a golf professional so I had to play a little golf) it broke just above the hozel. I got a replacement with the same exact specs, put it in the head, and it was terrible. It felt totally different, the over all weight was the same, but the flex characteristics and feel were totally different. The bummer was that the Ti shafts were all the rage at the time, and I saw a lot of them fail with use. There was a huge difference in the feel of each one as well.
Since feel is one of the most important factors in a rod, and since one would hope to be continually bending that rod (with fish on the other end) I would be very leary of getting a Ti rod.

Most of my rods are Loomis, but I do have a St. Croix, a Fenwick, and some Shimano as well. Biggest problem I have with them all is not getting the string pulled enough!

Just my $.02

Isn't it funny how all rods are compared to the Loomis line. They set the standard and everyone else trys to duplicate them. I will be the first to admit I don't care for certain models of the Loomis line. I felt Loomis made a mistake when it entered the low end market by introducing the GL3 line of rods. You would be better off with off with a Fenwick or St Croix. Now if your talking a specialty rod or IMX and above, brother you will find true love......[Wink]

Just like Yamamoto; every plastic company in the nation has a senko replica but none are as good as the original.

you can put me down for 20 rods and 8 ice fishing rods.
3 loomis, 5 fenwick, 4 fish eagle II cabels witch all have a fancy custom wraps, 3 sabre witch no longer see water, 1 allstar, 1 big old ulgy stick, and 2 fly rods witch one of them is split bamboo and no longer sees water. and 1 cabelas Im6. later chuck

Hey nails, thats interesting.
I didnt think the rods actually had titanium in them. But now I am wondering.
I figured it was just the name of the rod. Kind of high-lighting the strong but light idea.
It does have titanium carbide guides.

It may have titanium worked in to the graphite as a composite.

Time for more research.

But Loomislover, whos comparing anything to loomis? Not me. I didnt see anyone compare a rod from the loomis line to any other.
I persoanlly compare all my rods to the Fenwick HMG Airamid Veil.

Sounds to me like Bassrods compares everything against Lamiglass rods.

Tomegun doesnt compare rods, he buys straight loomis.

Chuck didnt say what he compares against cause I happen to know he compares against his own. He builds all his own rods. It may be a loomis blank, fenwick blank, st croix or any other.

I dont think loomis owns the market on high end rods at all. I dont think any of the other companies build thier rods around loomis.

Dont get me wrong, I like loomis. At least what I own. Cant speak for any of the Gl-3 type rods. Havent tried any.

As for me, I like St Croix legend elite and the new legend tournaments best, but when talking comparison, the legend elite runs $300.00. The legend tournaments run $210.00

The Fenwick HMG AV runs $150.00
Its one ultra sweet rod for that kind of cash.

If I had to say what was the better rod for the money, well......

For me, Its not about the brand. Its totally objective. I gotta try bolth brands before I count one better than the other.
If all you own is one kind, and you claim its the best, I have to question what makes you think so?
Two categories only.
Best rod bar none.
Best rod for the money.

Its like saying saying tracker is the best boat on the planet when you havent fished a trition or a hells bay boat.

I was very glad to see objective input like Bassrods and The Nails.
Less about having a name, and more about why they choose the rod.

[Tongue][#505000] Maybe I'm not enough of a purist, or maybe I am a royal cheapskate, but paying more than $50 for a rod, just ain't right!! Then again, paying less than $30 for a rod makes me a little nervous as well....[/#505000]

Oh no not another contest!!! hee hee.

Titanium ? Well as long as the temp is not below zero you'd probably be OK. I used some titanium snowshoes(issued by the U.S. Government) and they would almost stick to your skin if you even got close to them.

I have a Fenwick HMG ultralight(I use it with 1 or 2 pound line) that is just delightfull - I have even put a fly reel with 2 weight line on it(that way on a hike I only have to carry one rod), and it casts beautifully(OK, so I only have a few feet of line out while I cast flies at tiny fish on tiny streams).

The choice is between these 2 rods. With out feeling them in your hand it is just a guessing game, but All Star has to be the first to check out because you know it is not a here now and gone tomarrow company, that is a company that has been around for a while and has a good reputation. So if you have any future needs to deal with the company they should be there for you. Helium-USA ? New one on me. Maybe they will be the All-Star of 10 yrs. ago, I had not heard of them either. That Helium sure does look nice though!
New Gear! AHHHHH! Yes!

Tuben2: you just don't want to go there dude,we'll be counting for hours....
[signature]
Tubn2 are you sure you counted them all...seems you forgot the bullgill rods and the halibut rods...not to mention the rockfish rods. [Wink] All in fun...but we shoud have a you show me yours and I'll show you mine....fishing rods...that is.

And yes I kinda do compare everything to Lamiglas. I've fished fenwick, loomis, daiwa, shimano..got an ugly stick, had some custom made by cotton cordell, have a bamboo fly rod and a titanium lamiglass flipping stick...several no names and some that I would really like to give a name to...but counting them...I don't have the time or the energy. [cool]

Well, at least he has a good inventory system. Are you to be the "source" of his "hoped for" rods of the future ? If you look into it, you might notice more of a pattern of "western migration".

You know, until I saw your collection of gear, I thought I had gone a little "overboard" - now, I think I am basically under-equipped in comparison.

Thank you for the justification to get more stuff by your "not too frugal" example - not that I really needed much of a reason or excuse to accumulate more.

This could be one of those rare examples of "More = More" and "Less = Less".
[signature]
20,30,40, rods or more ? i just don't see the need after a while it just reaches a point of redundancy . I mean hey you can only use 1 ( ok 2 at a time....at times )
[signature]
The "Allstar" Rods are nice bro! They are popular in the northwest. My buddy George Roth makes custom rods using their blanks. "Lamiglass" is popular as well. If it were me, Allstar would be the choice between the two.
[signature]
I didn't include the 3 telescope surf rods that I have in the truck for emergencies. Some of my rods are shelf items and some I have aquired from TubeDad.

Most of my rods are compiled of Customs, Fenwicks, GLoomis, St.Croix, Shimano, Daiwas, Shakespheres, Calstars, Seekers,Allstars and even a few Zebcos, older Berkleys, Sears and Kencore.[cool]

I'm almost done with my rod rack setups and will have some photos of the small collection.[Wink]
[signature]
I think more of your rods have migrated to the western front than swallows that have returned to Capistrano.[Wink]
