WAUSAU, WI— Wisconsin lawmakers have proposed legislation that would require nonresidents to pay a fee to use permanent or portable ice shelters on state waters. Lawmakers say the proposal is a response to a similar fee Minnesota charges all ice anglers—residents and nonresidents.

The proposal would require nonresident anglers to buy a 7-day ($20) or annual permit ($34) to place an ice shelter on state waters. The bill has been approved by the state Assembly and now goes to the Senate.
