ELEPHANT BUTTE, NM— A New Mexico trotliner recently caught a 52-pound, ¼-ounce blue catfish, shattering the former New Mexico state record (set in 2001) by more than 18 ½ pounds.
David Gower landed the fish the North Monticello area of Elephant Butte Lake while fishing carp as bait. The fish was 43 ½ inches long and 30 ¼ inches around.
Elephant Butte Lake is known for producing big cats. The former blue cat record was also caught in the lake, as well as the state-record flathead.
