Has anyone tried a gas motor on there toon? I've been thinking about trying one on mine. Honda makes a 2hp 4 stroke ( 27 lbs) and merc and yamaha make a 2.5 hp 4 stroke (37 lbs). That sure beats lugging around a 60lbs battery and 20lbs minn kota.

[cool][#0000ff]Get a boat. To me, the whole idea of "flotation fishing" is the quiet and unpolluting aspects of it. [/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]I have seen pics and writeups on guys using small outboards. Heck, they even have adaptors so that you can use one an a tube. [/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]What's next? Twin 150's? That would definitely move you down the lake in a hurry.[/#0000ff]

I am one who has tried a gas motor on my toon(about 12 foot). A Yamaha 3 hp 2 stroke(it was really a motor for another boat of mine). I just wanted to experiment with it one time. I'll give you a hint here: that 3 horse pushes my 16 foot boat around with two adult anglers and all gear plus a full live well with fish at 4.8 mph - imagine what it did with just me at 145 and my 75 pound pontoon boat.

Don't do it ! You don't need that kind of power for a pontoon boat and a pontoon boat isn't really designed for that kind of friction against the water. Another problem is that of not being able to go slow enough to troll for a lot of species of fish. With my Yamaha on my pontoon boat, the minimum speed I could keep was between 3.2 and 3.6 mph. The motors you've described would be more suited to a 10 to 12 foot aluminum fishing boat.

Go stealth - that's one of the advantages of the small floation water craft. True the battery is heavy, but with my Minkota 30 lb motor and a marine battery I can troll almost all day(I still bring my oars) - with virtually no noise, smell, or vibrations.

Fishhound, thanks for sharing your wisdom and experience about a gas motor on a toon!!
Last Friday , I went up to Current Creek and tried a little Yamaha 2.5 (4-stroke).At idle I was doing 1.8 (gps)and with my feet in the water I was down to 1.1,but I didn't like the vibration.
Sense I had the motor on the toon and had most of the day to play around I cranked it up to 4mph and gave my fish finder a workout. I mapped out the whole Lake, I found a lot of structure and fish that I wouldn't have had the range with my electric.
Now that I have tried the gas motor, I'll go back to hauling around that heavy battery [Sad]
I can see two reasons to use a gas motor. If your fishing a new Lake and want to find a lot of the structure to fish later or if where you want to fish is a long distance from your launch point.
BTW,my toon was designed for using a gas motor.

[cool][green]Years ago I enjoyed fishing from a canoe. Nice and peaceful and one could really sneak up on the fish. One of my friends bought a square back aluminum canoe with a motor. He would brag about being able to get to the fish before any of us could. Guess what? All that motor racket just chase them away to a nice quiet space that we were patrolling. Any guess as to who caught more fish. [/green] [green]Using a motor on a toon or tube is like taking a stroll in the park on a Harley.[/green]

[#0000ff]Either way, it IS kinda much. I stand by my original statement. If you want a gas motor, get a boat...and leave the stealth mode to us dedicated tubers and tooners.[/#0000ff]

I have a gas motor for my pontoon boat and it is great it is noisy but that is it. Everyone I fish with has an electric motor and all that crap about sneaking up I out fish them almost everytime. I can get anywhere on the lake and I can troll at a good speed. It doesn't weigh down my boat like an electric and it's easier to work with I don't have to worry about the battery dieing or anything there are the pros and cons with both of them but the only thing I think is bad about it is that it is noisy but I still catch fish.
