[#ff0000]Anglers are reminded that the thermal refuge areas on the Housatonic, Naugatuck and Shetucket Rivers are now closed to fishing and will reopen on September 1.[/#ff0000] Although Housatonic River anglers are familiar with thermal refuges, these areas are a new addition to the Shetucket and Naugatuck Rivers. From June 15 through August 31, all fishing within 100 feet of tributaries as posted by DEP (look for white signs) is prohibited. Shetucket River refuges are located at the mouths of Merrick Brook (Scotland) and Beaver Brook (Sprague). Naugatuck River refuges are located at the mouths of Pickett’s Brook (in TMA), Spruce Brook (in TMA, Litchfield), Spruce Brook (Naugatuck), Fulling Mill Brook (Naugatuck), Beacon Hill Brook (Naugatuck/Beacon Falls) and Bronson Brook (aka Hockanum Brook- Beacon Falls).
Rivers & streams - Good trout fishing reported from the Farmington (22” rainbow), Shetucket, Housatonic, Naugatuck (deep holes), Fivemile, and Salmon Rivers and Mashmoquet Brook. Early morning and evenings are peak summer fishing times. Look for rainbow trout to be in the fast water and the browns to be in the larger, deeper pools. Bait fisherman are relying on a corn/mealworm combination.
The Farmington River is currently 60°F with 180 cfs of clear flows at Riverton (and an additional 40 cfs from the Still River). [#ff0000]Farmington River anglers are advised that during the week of 7/18 to 7/24, West Branch flows may be lower[/#ff0000] (closer to 100 cfs) as there will be no releases for downstream power generation. DEP Inland Fisheries has also requested a low flow period on July 19 to conduct some fish sampling. During this week, DEP will also be performing some habitat remediation/enhancement in the “Boneyard”. A good morning hatch of summer caddis reported Needhami (#20-26, early morning), Isonychia (#10-14, evening), Blue Wing Olives (#22-24, mid-late afternoon), Sulphurs duns (#18-20, morning; afternoon to early evening for spinners), Caddis (tan #14-18, all day; green #22-26, evening), Midges (#22-28, morning), Black Ants (#14-18, morning in fast water), Black Beetles (#16-18), Flying Ants (#18-22, when humid) and Golden Drake (Potomanthus, #10-14, late evening) are successful patterns. The Housatonic River is currently 72°F with 415 cfs of clearing flows. Insect hatches include: Alder Caddis (#10-12, afternoon-evening near overhangs), Sulphurs (#14-16, evening), Blue Wing Olive (#18-22, early morning; spinner fall in evening), Isonychia (#12-14 evening), Light Cahill (#12-14, evening), and Tan & green caddis (#14-16, early morning & evening). Look for midges and stoneflies at the mouths of streams (golden stonefly nymphs hatch at first light and adults egg-lay after dark). Don’t forget streamers (morning & evening). Patterns to try include: White Zonkers, Wooly Buggers, Muddlers, Micky Finn, Grey or Black Ghosts (#4-10).
Lakes & Ponds –Good trout fishing can still be found in a number of lakes and ponds including Lake McDonough (3 lb rainbow), Candlewood Lake (very good, 25 trout for one angler), West Hill Pond, East Twin Lake, Wonoscopomuc lake (several in the 4-5 lb range, caught on corn) and Beach Pond. Larry Mas (Hawleyville) recently caught a 12 lb brown trout (28” length, 18” girth) on a jitterbug at Lake Zoar. [#004080]MARINE REPORT[/#004080]

STRIPED BASS fishing remains good on the local reefs. Live lining scup and the tube and worm combination are working well for “cow” bass. Both stripers and bluefish can be found off Watch Hill, Ram Island Reef, the Race, Plum Gut, Bartlett Reef, the humps south of Hatchett Reef, Long Sand Shoal, Southwest Reef, Sixmile Reef, the reefs off Branford, New Haven Harbor, Charles Island area, Penfield Reef, and around the Norwalk Islands.
SUMMER FLOUNDER (fluke) fishing has slowed down in LIS for legal sized fish (a lot of throwbacks). However, doormats over 7 lbs. are being caught in water 90 to 120 ft. but the pick is slow.
Try for BLACK SEA BASS and WEAKFISH in New Haven Harbor, Niantic Bay including Black Point, and off Mattituck. There have been rumors of a new State Record for black sea bass being taken. However, this catch has not been verified by the DEP, Marine Fisheries Division at this time.
TAUTOG (blackfish) can also be found along with SCUP on the any of the major reefs located in LIS.
Try the Niantic River for HICKORY SHAD.
