I know how much people hate carp but at least pop their air bladder so they wont float all over the lake and end up on shore stinking up the place! [pirate]If you pop the air bladder they will sink to the bottom were eventually other critters can eat them rather than the flies!

I don't think you should blame the carp on the shores on people. Something natural has been putting the hurt on them at Willard and Utah lake. Hundreds are floating around all bloated and dead. Although I do wish I could take some of the credit/blame.[

[#505000]Air bladder or no, when any body (human, fish, animal, ect) decomposes the bacteria that start to eat it form gases, usually in the digestive system first, eventually every dead thing in the water will float for a time, then eventually sink again as the decomposition progresses. [/#505000]

[#505000]I had the opportunity to sit down to lunch with some of the guys who were searching for the guy who drown in Utah Lake a few weeks back. Based on the water temps they were able to figure out when he would start floating, and they were only off by an hour or two. They recovered the body quickly after the "float factor" kicked in.[/#505000]

[#505000]I wish I could put a serious of a dent in the carp poulation myself, but this time I can't take credit. [/#505000]

You "turn em" into catfish bait anyway don't you?

[#505000]On my "hunting" trips I will often bring a carp or two home for processing into bait. The rest I leave as fertilizer. I have never hunted at the main part of the lake itself. I usually hunt well away from where anyone is going to be bothered by my handiwork.[/#505000]

You can't use those old dead floaters anyway... the flesh is too mushy and I think even cats would be turned off by the smell of those rotten things.... Just flat out NASTY!!! [
] I actually was thinking of coming down this last weekend to LB to have somebody shoot a carp for me to use for the cats where I go. Even with fresh stream caught bait, I think Carp would have produced better... not saying I didn't appreciate the bites I got but carp would have been nice to have. I guess I just need to get a bow and perform my own version of the carp removal from the lake. Anyway, I understand about unpleasant floating trash smell, but if this is happening up at Willard and some of the other lakes, sounds to me like another biological deal.... maybe nature taking care of the carp problem her own way?? if thats the case, guess we just gotta deal with the dead fish. Question..... do the carp have any way to kill each other in their spawning madness?? Beating each other to death with their thrashing around and that?? I dont know, thats why I'm asking.

[#505000]You can buy a P.O.S bow at a pawn shop for relatively cheap. When it comes to shooting carp you don't need anything fancy. Also another way to procure some carp is to find a raft of them congregating on the surface. Cast a 1/8oz or 1/4oz jig past them then reel it through them fairly quickly. When you feel it "hang up" set the hook and prepare for a bit of a fight. [/#505000]
[#505000][/#505000]
[#505000]If you choose the bow method, I would recommend aluminum arrows in shallow water and beware the long shot. You can kill bajillions of carp on 2-3 arrows if you take close shots only (less than 10 feet away). [/#505000]

[#505000]If you haven't already I'd search out Tubedude's pictoral and write up on preparing carp cut bait. I've tried several different methods and his seems to work the best. My last trip I brought home 3 carp and I have a sizable supply of the smelly pigs cut up nice and neat in the freezer right next to the ice cream.[/#505000]

Some of the biggest cats I have seen caught were caught on rotting carp that somebody left on shore. The hard part was not breathing while we cut the rotting meat from the carcass after it had been sun baked for a couple days.

When the carp ran up the provo river a couple years ago, many of them died because there was just so flippin' many of them. I couldn't believe the numbers of fish. When the DWR went through with those fish shocker things, A LOT of the carp died and were swept downstream. I heard that last time the carp did this, nothing was done and they all ended up dieing anyways. Iv'e heard it's because they breath all of the oxygen in the water, or that they eat all available food, I personally don't know for sure.
Oh man..... you must have a cast iron stomach. [sly] I tried some and it got outperformed by fresh stuff by quite a bit... I finally stopped because mushing my fingers through all that nastiness just grossed me out. I'm sure if you have clothespins for your nose, you can do just about anything out there.... Ha Ha Ha.... [
] Thanks for the heads up on the bow and arrow suggestions. I'll have to try that. I live kinda by a Sportsmans fast cash pawn shop so I'll have to run in there and see what I get.

Who says you need a bow when I was a kid we used to go out to this pond behind my grandpas and carp would get caught in the shallows of this pond we would take our b.b. guns and just shoot them in the head with the b.b. guns.just as effective.[sly]

[#505000]Depends, if DWR considers a BB gun a firearm that would be illegal. I know in our city we consider them fiarearms. You are right though, I suppose any spear, pitchfork ect.... would do the trick nicely!! [][/#505000]

Another good way is to fashion a spear from an old shovel handle. Remove the shovel from the end of the handle so all you have is the wood stick. Then, you can attach a knife, gaff-like hook or anything else you can think of to use as a spearhead.

A big ol frog gig setup would also work very well. This is a pitchfork like spear on a 30 foot stick of bamboo! MMMMM, frog legs.

this was well over 25 yrs ago that I was a youngster. hopefully the statute of limitations has expired if not ,it wasnt me I wasnt there and have never even seen a B.B.gun.[angelic] another good way to vent some frustrations and take care of a few carp is a good 'ol fashioned baseball bat. batter up[crazy]

You must be in Lehi [
]! How does one get away with calling a BB gun a FIRE-arm. Just a question as there is NO fire in BB guns and they can be sold without a background check. Have limited range to say the least. I remember when I was young and even more stupid having BB gun battles with other kids in the neighborhood. It was quite fun getting little red welts from the BBs. Thankfully nobody ever got hurt or lost an eye. Man I'm glad I grew up a bit.
[signature]
[#505000]Nope Springville, I would have to double check because it's been awhile, but if I recall I think they also classify paintball guns in that "firearm" mix as well.[/#505000]
