Saturday I took an hour or so to take my son on his very first fishing trip with daddy (he's just turned 1). We headed over to Salem Pond to try it out for the first time. I'd never been there before. For those of you who don't know, it's a very nice place to bring kids -- it's got a large lawn area, with swings, slides, etc. picnic tables, a walking path around the pond, several fishing peers, a small boat ramp, and lots of places to fish, then let the kids play if they get bored. It has bathroom facilities as well.
There is a tiny little pond adjacent to the main pond by the parking lot on the south side. We parked right there and right away I noticed this little algae infested pond. At first I thought no way would there be fish in this little extension of the main pond, but as I watched, I noticed there were several dragonflies hitting the water laying eggs, and there were little fish jumping up out of the water trying to grab them whenever they even got close to the water. So I tossed out some jigs to see if I could get any followers, but they kept hitting my swivel! So, I switched to bait and tossed a tiny piece of worm out. Gots hits immediately. It didn't take long to bring up the first green sunfish.
Do you think he likes fish? As soon as I brought it up out of the water he was laughing and giggling like crazy. He wanted to grab the fish but I thought getting stabbed by sunfish spines would probably sour his first fishing experience, so I just let him touch it.
Caught a couple more and then spent the rest of the time trying to hook one of the 25 lb. carp cruising around in the main pond -- with no luck. Left around 1:00 and headed back home.
Can't wait to take him out again this week, as we will be gone the whole week on a family reunion at Strawberry and Jordanelle.
That's my boy!!!
