BRANSON, MO—Missouri angler Bryan Chapman was recently fishing with his son on Lake Taneycomo when he hooked a state record brown trout.

"I thought I was snagged on the bottom," Chapman says. "I didn't understand what was going on."
Just as the fish came up next to Chapman's boat, however, his line broke. Quick action with a landing net prevented it from escaping.
Missouri Department of Conservation (DOC) employee James Civiello later certified the fish's weight at 27 pounds. Chapman's catch tops Missouri's previous record brown trout, a 26-pound, 13-ounce fish caught on Bull Shoals Lake in 1997.
