OLYMPIA, WA—The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (DFW) recently announced that the Chewuch River will be closed to all fishing from now through Sept. 30, from the mouth to Eight Mile Creek and the Twisp River.
The DFW says the closure is the result of extremely low water coupled with high summer temperatures that have concentrated juvenile steelhead into habitats where they are susceptible to high mortality rates through repeated catch-and-release fishing. The DFW says it's trying to reduce fishing pressure on juvenile steelhead because of the endangered status of upper Columbia River steelhead.
