One of the seams has started to split on the bottom of my pontoon. The thread has broken and a tiny bit of the bladder is showing. The toon is made out of PVC coated nylon I believe. I was wondering if any one knew of a person or a place where I could have this stitched up. I can take out the bladder so it could be easily accessed, but I think it would take some sort of heavy duty sewing machine. right now I've got a few layers of duct tape over the bad spot to keep the bladder from wearing. Any help or ideas would be appreciated. On a side note, I live in Woods Cross, so a place on the north end of the valley would be preferable, but not necessary.

Perhaps a shoe repair place could fix it up for you. There is one in North Salt Lake on Highway 89, two or three blocks north of the post office.

You need to take it to a place that sells awnings. I dont know of one up there. I live in south provo, But any place does awnings or upholstery will have the means to fix your toon.

[cool][#0000ff]I have fixed lots of seams over the years, for pockets, air chambers, D ring connections, etc. A commercial sewing machine job looks cleaner, but you can do just fine with a big needle and some size D or E rod wrapping nylon thread. When you finish the sewing, finish it with a layer of Aqua Seal and it will be stronger than the original.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]I have plenty of thread, needles and Aqua Seal. If you can't find a "sew and sew", shoot me a PM and we can adjourn to my garage.[/#0000ff]

A few years ago we used a canvas repair place at the Feeport center in Syracuse who did a great job on fixing some tears in my float tube canvas as well as replacing the zipper in my tent. Look under canvas repair and the Freeport center and you should find it. Jake

That would be at Brian's Canvas. They do good work there.

GO TO A SEWING SHOP BY A PEACE OF NYLON ABOU 3 INCHES WIDE AN 3 INCHES LONGER THAN SEAM SPLIT. ALSO BY CURVED NEEDLES 4 INCH ARE BEST FOR THIS TYPE OF REPAIRS. TURN BLADDER INSIDE OUT AND PLACE NYLON PATCH IN PLACE THEN START STITCHING. A BASE BALL STITCH WORKS BEST TO PULL SEAM BACK TOGETHER. BUT ANY STITCH WILL WORK.. A BASEBALL STITCH IS DONE BY 2 NEEDLES AT ONE TYME. IF YOU LOOK ON THE NET IM SURE YOU CAN FIND A DIAGRAM OF HOW ITS DONE IF NOT PM ME AND ILL EXPLAIN IT FURTHER. I RAN THE FURNITURE REPAIR SHOP FOR RCWILLEY FOR FOUR YRS AND REPAIRED THOUSANDS OF SEAMS AS WELL ASW TRAINED MANY PEOPLE HOW TO DO SAME. TUBE DUDES WAY WILL ASLO HOLD WELL. THE SEALER IS ASWAYS GOOD AFTER FIXING SOME THAT WILL GET WET ALOT.

[cool]Phil, it sounds like TD can hook you up pretty well, but I just wanted to add my .02 to the mix. If TD is too busy or whatever, I know that Sugarhouse Awnings(sp?) does a great job on stuff like that. They custom make boat covers, awnings, and all sorts of stuff like that (and repair them too). I used to have a Geo Tracker convertable and they repaired my top a couple of times and did good work. They used to be in Sugarhouse, but I think they got a new shop down on State St. somewhere. Look them up if you and TD don't hook up, but he'd be MY first option!

IF YOU WANT TO SPEND MONEY THAN A TOP SHOP OR ANY SEAMSTRESS CAN FIX IT. I DONT GET WHY SO MANY PEOPLE THROUGH THEIR MONEY AWAY FOR THINGS LIKE THIS. DO IT YOUR SELF FOR LESS THAN 3 BUCKS. PAY A SHOP TWENTY. THERE WHEN 17 DALLORS OF LURES, GAS MONEY, EXT. JUST DONT GET IT?

I had the same problem a few years ago. My sister-in-law has a power machine and did a great job for me. She lives in Roy.
Now so that it doesn't happen again: My toon was sitting on the short at Strawberry after a morning of fishing. All of a sudden it started to move on its own. I thought that a rat or something was under it. What had happened was that the air temperature was getting hot and the air had expanded in the bladders, ripping the seam in one of them. I now let some air out as soon as I get off the water. I also leave the bladders under inflated when I travel. The higher altitude in the mountains and the heat both will cause expansion in the bladders.
I hope that this will remind others to keep the pressure in their toons and tubes a little low until you are ready to launch. It may help keep a good fishing day from turning bad for you.

Thanks for the help everyone. I'm off hunting for a few days but I think I'm going to try to hook up with Pat when I get back and see if I can't do it myself and save a few bucks.
